Question. I work in firearm manufacturing, so I'm not a complete idiot with mechanical things, but know nothing about cars.

If I were to spend 4 hours a day on it, how long do you think it would take to be reasonably proficient at 'car things?' By proficient, I mean being able to conduct all maintenance and troubleshooting myself, and ideally all repairs that can reasonably be done in a garage. Assume that this proficiency applies to one vehicle, or class of vehicles (if that exists).

I always wanted to get into mechanics but suck at it.

Was thinking about buying a vintage heap like a mk1 golf and try to restore it from the ground up with pointers from my dad.

Am sculptor so body work is piss easy for me. Everyone in my family is an engineer or mech, so I hate myself.

Should I do this?

Nah, just nervous about starting out in the industry. No experience needed to start. They let you do oil changes and tires. Then you study and buy tools. Take ase tests. Get promoted. i cracked head would cause it to run on 2 cylinders, it would just get hot. If i where you i would run a compression check. Sounds like a coil pack to me thou

why does my car sometimes not start right, then when I try again 2 seconds later it does? I'm thinking starter or battery
>>
>>719106353
My roomate does a little work on cars, we checked fuel pressure/changed spark plugs/also changed head gaskets
>>
>>719106561
that's a pretty vague description...

what does it do? slow to turn over? clunk/click? or just crank for several seconds before it fires off? varying symptoms with varying causes.
>>
>>719106527
How would I run a compression check?
>>
>>719099096
How do you feel about charging customers for your mistakes? Like when you replace something and it doesn't fix the original problem..
>>
>>719100477
hey nigga how did you get started in firearm manufacturing?

i just tinker with guns for fun but want to get a little more serious

with somethings it's a process of elimination.

Am poorfag, have no car. But yeah I feel like hands on experience is the key and I barely get any
>>719106504
I assume to be bought online?
>>
It takes a second to crank as if it was a bad battery and then it will turn over sometimes have to give it gas to crack

Worked on cars for a few years on my own. Been with my current employer as a tech for about a year and a half. To be honest I'm still not all that great at it. I learn new shit every time I touch a car. The book knowledge is useful but hands on experience is priceless and you can't fake it or buy it. You'll never know which one you prefer until you try

bro, your scaring me lol. My brother is a line men, he loves it but the weather can make it 1000x more dangerous then it already is. After linemen school expect to travel a lot. I love being a marine mechanic. I got lucky, my highschool offered a class called marine tech. After that i did an apprenticeship to become a marine mechanic. been doing it for 6 years now. When i started i worked on the lake at a marina, I fixed there borkes and went on calls. Was a great time.

My car does this sound when I go over bumps. It comes from the front and it sounds just like if you say "scrunch" out loud. Not a squeak or grind. Doesn't do it if you bounce the car up and down stationary. What the hell is causing it?
>>
>>719106708
rpms go to like 700 then down to 300ish then back up to 700 then dead

Car shakes a lot when this occurs too
>>
>>719106850
still not a real good description, but probably a starter issue, best thing to do would be to try and tap it with a hammer when it acts up. if it works after tapping on it, definitely a starter, if not,
>>
>>719106561
Possibly a weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter or lines, could be a bad engine ground. Same thing happened to me and it was electrical. Try turning the key to run but not start once or twice before you try to start
>>
>>719107087
probably a throttle body/idle air control issue.

Only happened once on a Ford mustang that I diagnosed as a fuel pump and it still didn't start after I was done. They paid for the part, labor was free. So basically half price and I fucking hated it. I hate being wrong

Bullshit. THAT'S how you justify incompetence?
You can't read a fault tree?

I think o'reillys will let you rent a comperssion checker. You take out the spark plug and put in a special hose that comes with the kit. you turn the car over 3-5 times and see what the compression gauge shows you. You will have to look up what compression your supposed to make. Basically if your compression is too low, it wont fire. This can be caused by hung valve, burnt valve, and piston rings. With bad piston rings you will notice white smoke coming out of the valve cover and condensation in the valve cover. This normally happens when cars get a lot of miles put on them the cylinder walls will wear bigger and bigger to where it does not make enough compression for the vehicle to operate. The term used for this could also be called "blow by"

notice the words some and things, faggot.

most things you just eat labor and sell the part at cost, if they choose to keep it.
>>
Why do you buy Matco garbage?
>>
>>719100987
We understand that change makes you REEEEE, but most people don't like looking at trap threads all day.

Sorry A little salty after dealer ripped my headliner out to replace my sunroof (for a rattle) only to have it be no better after getting it back a week later. THe second time I brought it in they now claim to have discovered a way to simply adjust it. Everything rattles now.... oh did I mention I had an additional warranty? Pisses me off when dealers use customers to fleece aftermarket warranty businesses. Fuckers.

Indeed. Quality is certainly top notch but their are other decent brands out there that also have lifetime warranties for 1/3 the price..
