The anti-evaporation strategy makes sense. I work in a biochemistry laboratory and we have to do chemical reactions at 95 degrees C. We have a water bath we submerge samples in that is kept at 95 C all day every day. It is covered with little white plastic balls to prevent evaporation.

Since the water is just below boiling it would all evaporate away very fast and we would have to constantly refill it all day. This would also effect the temperature since we would constantly be adding fresh water.

The balls almost totally eliminate evaporation. But since our water is super hot and basically boiling nothing grows in it. I imagine keeping an entire lake under warm dark balls could cause bacterial growth issues.

Basically I'm just saying the balls do make sense to prevent evaporation. But the bacterial growth could be a problem.
