Most people carry pocketknives for use as utility tools, not primary defensive tools. Small knives are shit for self-defense.

Well, beside it being a form of protection, perhaps you carry one on the job, something needs to be cut, or your a hunter or something like that. As for Mace, it works and it works well but there are ways around it. While a knife in the arm, leg, or gut is kinda hard to get around.

What other major pistol calibers are there? I've been thinking about getting a pistol just to take it on the range, no defence or anything. 9mm is honestly the best choice available today. There are smaller calibers (.380 ACP, .32, .25) but they aren't common and ammo is harder to find and often more expensive than 9mm.

.40 cal is another option, it fits between 9 and .45 in terms of power. Widely used by American police, but many depts are switching to 9mm and you can find lots of inexpensive lightly used .40 cal handguns on the market. Price of ammo will however be slightly higher than 9mm.

So do most other rounds. That can be mitigated slightly with bonded hollowpoints, and there are rounds that are good choices if you're specifically looking to shoot into cars (like 357 SIG) but that's generally not a fucking concern for people unless you're a cop.

I have the Wingman. Way more useful than I expected it to be. The scissors, pliers, and phillips screwdriver get the most use. One thing I don't like is the Wingman's lack of saw blade. I would trade the emery board or the package opener hook thing for a saw blade on this model.

Also have a very old Swiss army knife, gift from my grandfather. It is too sentimental to carry around and use for intended purpose. I would hate to lose it.

Hey thanks! Gotta tell you though, the blade on this particular canoe is carbon steel just like your grandad's and even just carrying it in the pocket can pick up rust spots within a week if you forget to oil it so it's a constant battle. That being said, just keep a tube of gun oil around at home or office, make sure there's always a light coat on the blade, and it'll hold up fine. I carry this stainless mini-trapper in the back pocket for apple-peeling (saves trouble with the carbon canoe) and bottle opening

I'll upgrade to a better pocket knife and multi tool when these pieces of crap break. They do well enough now though. I usually carry the folding Gerber and the multi tool. The other two I only use when hiking or if I leave them in my pack for other activities.
