TENS machines on eBay are rarely more than $60, usually a lot less.

But what you describe, how would it work exactly?
Can a computer really safely deliver that much power through the headphone port?

It delivers a tiny voltage while having no isolation.
You wouldnt be able to feel anything and it wouldn't be safe.

TENS units deliver just a very short pulse (most cheaper units do maximum 90Volt / 25mA) and the intensity depends on the amount of pulses while stereo stim units with an audio transformer can do all kinds of waveforms and frequencies.

The computer or TENS chip just delivers an audio signal or pulse which gets amplified by the unit and sent through a transformer.
The transformer steps up the voltage from ~8Volt to ~100-200 Volt while providing isolation and protection against direct current.
The power going into the transformer is almost the same which goes out but the voltage/current ratio is different - thats how it works.

You don't want high currents (of over 20mA) because of skin burns and safety and most electrodes are in the range of 1kOhm to 1MOhm anyway.
To get the power through, you'd need high voltages at low currents.

Depends on what you want.
Most 'cheaper' units are weak and lack of settings (its just intensity up and down and/or a few presets).
Some like the 2b box allow remote control and sound input but are pricey.
There are some nice sound files out there and good software so its worth it.
DIY boxes need a bit of skill but are cheap.

I'm more curious as to whether cheaper units (not $5, more like $50) are good enough to have any fun with, or if they're only good enough to serve their purpose of dulling pain.

It'd be fun to have one powerful enough that it could possibly cause numbness, as a crazy sort of bondage.
