Best thing to keep in your car is a hammer. You can justify it to police as a tool, and it really does serve that purpose. A horseman's warhammer was only a bit longer and heavier than a good modern framing hammer.

Most effective weapon you could use is going to be a short spear, like 4.5-5.5ft long. Not a great thing to have on a medieval battlefield, but it's great for murdering anyone who doesn't have a shield. And doesn't take much talent to use effectively.

You can use a baseball bat in a spear like fashion as we'll. You can easily break some ribs this way or smash someone's face. I'm starting to come around on the baseball bat. It's a great defensive weapon too.

Against an unarmored opponent, a sword, probably a fencing sword is best. You don't need more than a small stab to kill someone anyway.

Against an armored opponent, a mace. You are not going to cut through heavy armor, but you can bash through it.

Against multiple opponents, probably a large sword would work best.

If you are fighting in a formation, it's a spear/polearm.

Depends on the situation. If we're put in the open I'd take any mother fucker on with a machete, but if someone attacks me in a hallway or in my house or something I'd rather use a knife. I'm a former medieval combat fighter. I fought EMP for 10 years seeing just about every melee weapon there is and I can tell you under thinking is what will make you lose. If you're against someone with a large sword and you have a dagger because you didn't THINK they would use a claymore then you're at the disadvantage for not doing your homework.

Back to the point if it's going to be a stupid simple question then it's the club.

The club is stupidly easy to wield, requires no formal training and has 100% strike surface.

Against a sword I'll take a blunt weapon with more strike surface any day. I can throw straight shots to the shoulder or neck with little effort on my part. The versatile nature of a 100% strike surface weapon also ensures that I don't telescope my defenses and shots whereas you merely have to watch the hilt of a bladed weapon to read their next shot because they only have so many directions they can go due to low amount of strike surface.

Before I fought EMP I fought Belegarth. It's like full contact LARP without the RP portion. In short you give a bunch of guys pvc/carbon fiber poles with camping foam around them and tell them to beat the shit out of each other.
It's not too intense but it gives you the training needed for wielding a melee weapon.

Agree on the hammer. They are a very effective weapon, if you want a little more reach you can get a nice heavy framing hammer. They are designed to focus the force in a small area, so wherever you strike there will be massive pain and bone damage. Plus like this guy said, it's a tool not a weapon. I love when people come to our meets thinking it's easy without any training. When I was in Bel and practiced in parks we use to have chads come in to try to "show us up". They would usually get rekt within the first 30 seconds because they don't have the speed, coordination or technique in comparison to people who have been doing it for years.

Against an untrained opponent even a tree branch would be effective against any melee weapon they could be wielding.

The best way to ensure you'll always have the tactical advantage when talking about real life is to have training. Train with some real weapons against real opponents. The problem is too many people think it's as easy as it looks in the movies and quite frankly it's not.

I've never done kendo but I tend to wreck on all the weaboo kendo faggots that come to our practices and I'm trying to figure out why.

I'm under the assumption that it's an east vs. west thing and that honor is the Achilles heel of eastern styles. Knights would hit you in the shin with his mace then shove a sword through your helmet slits and I've noticed most kendo fighters don't like to hit below the belt.

kenjutsu (jutsu means art) is a martial art
kendo has only 3 points of contact - forearm, head, and sides of belly ( +neck but it doesnt give points in a dual and is hard to land)
kendoka only train with wooden/bamboo blade

Fuck I'm sick to death of this meme. Just because you're a medieval combat fighter doesn't mean you LARP or don't wear armor.

LARP is Live Action Roleplaying which is gay as fuck. You need character sheets and gear that reflects it. In the end they don't make any contact at all and actually frown on hitting each other.
Belegarth keeps the safety style weapons but encourages hitting each other as hard as possible. Shots that don't make enough contact that if it were a real weapon wouldn't maim or kill don't count so it really encourages a heavy hit. Due to using safety style weapons armor isn't required.
SCA requires at least leather armor and uses rattan/bamboo weapons.
EMP is full steel armor and full steel weapons.

iaido have specific blunted swords called iaito, tho they can use katanas too (a katana which is blunt is an iaito not a katana)
kenjutsu is very rare and I have never trained it, but afaik they do use katanas

Now is the training practical or is it duel only?
There's a comp in Japan so I might get to stay there for a while figure I might pick up an eastern style just for the experience. I want to know that the training is practical instead of just for competition style.

there is kendo, where you actually fight 1v1
there is iaido where you are put in situations of 1v1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8 , but usually its imaginary enemies (pic related)
not very practical, but i still recommend picking at least one up

That really lets me down. We train 1v3 in our third year and by fifth year we should be able to take the 1v5.
I'll look into it while I'm there though. Should be worth the technique training at least. Single edged weapons are a harsh mistress.

I can't go along with this at all. This just sounds like a terrible idea for a short spear. I'd rather have a full size in this situation but then again I'm not the one getting mauled by bears.

Its used as a last resort and if i run out of bullets. I carry a ruger super black hawk 357 mag on my side. The spear has many other uses including spearing trought. But if i had to pick a best melee weapon as in the op i would have to side with short spear. Mobility of sword good slasher and thrust and added 4 feet of reach.

That puts me at ease. Wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing you're running around the woods picking fights with bears just to fight them with a spear.

The problem with the spear is that only the tip of the weapon is considered deadly as well if you're in a match against someone with a shorter weapon once they move past the tip the spear puts you at a disadvantage.
It requires a lot of footwork to keep your opponent within lethal range, once they break that range you get tangled up in your own weapon and you can't effectively attack/defend once they move in close.

Spear is 2/10 weapon in a 1v1 duel due to lack of strike surface and versatility.

It depends on the enviorment. The closer the quarters the greater my advantage. If in a eide open area it shouldnt be a probly keeping someone at leathal range if you have the patirnce to defend rather then attack.
