It was an attempt to revive the old Space Opera style SciFi like Buck Rodgers and Flash Gordon into the modern film ear. Many say that Star Wars polarizing the American public in a way that allowed Reagan to get elected calling the Soviet Union an evil empire and get away with it. Perhaps Star Wars 7, was a boost to Trump?

From that, Lucas got whomever would work the movie. NO ONE knew how big it would get. It was a rocket everyone rode from the producers to the actors to the guy that ran a fork lift.
