I contacted the secretary of the local Blue Lodge and asked for a "Petition For Degrees" which I later received and completed. I don't think you are reading those works, though. Crowley and Pike are both very, very cryptic at times. The way you describe these works, and I've read Morals and Dogma, are strange. The "secret" or "esoteric" language is all throughout the book. In reality, there is no self to build upon or improve. For one thing, by joining, you could talk "openly" about some of your questions with others. Without joining, you can never talk "openly" about it, because no one will discuss these things in detail for fear of breaking their oaths.
