Grandfather (Dad's side) smuggled wine, cheese and cigarettes across the French-Belgian border to French resistance fighters.
Got shot in the leg during a night-run, but recovered pretty quickly.

Grandma (again, Dad's side) stayed in the "bunkers" in Kortrijk, Flanders as the bombs started falling.
Her dad told her to close her eyes on the way there in the car, and that she could hear and feel the bodies underneath the weels.

My great grandfather was a sharp shooter for the English. Born in Ireland and when the Irish refused to engage he took off to England to fight for them.

Had a collection of 13 Russian medals he had stripped from bodies he was able to gain access to (as most were unrecoverable) in his basement on a plaque until the day he died. My great grandmother thought it was barbaric and hated them, so they were donated as soon as he passed.

Wife's family has some interesting stories too. Grandfather joined the Red Army in China to escape an arranged marriage. Her great-grandfather on the other hand was a fairly high-ranking KMT military officer. Well my German great grandfather ran off to America with my polish great grandmother, so part of me is always hopeful he was in the ss

Grandfather 1 - Worked on some ship in charge of keeping the guns clean and in working order. I don't think he ever saw combat but he did spend a few months in Japan. He's 88 and still alive.

Grand Uncle - He said he did so well in basic training that he was chosen to be an instruct new recruits on how to use the guns in the B-17 and B-23. At the end of the war he was assigned to be the front gunner on a B-17, but a week before combat, the Germans surrendered. Then they flew him over to Japan for the same thing but about a few weeks later they dropped the nukes. He never saw real combat. He's 97 and still alive.

My grandfather died in Auschwitz. He was in the watch tower when it tragically collapsed.

Mine was a staff sergeant in the Wehrmacht and was deployed in northern France where he got some grenade shrapnel to the butt cheeks and was moved to an allied hospital and then was a pow. later the prison got overrun by Germans and he was free again, because of his wounds he didn't had to fight. After the Soviet occupation of Leipzig he was sent to a gulag where he barely survived. After all he died from lead poisoning in the GDR around the 80's, don't know the exact date now.

My father was a radio operator, inserted via submarine on to Leyte right after MacArthur withdrew. He spent the war relaying radio traffic from the middle of jungles, living off the land, running from the Japanese.

When he boarded the sub, he and the other volunteers were called to formation and a full-bird colonel shook each of their hands and thanked them for giving their lives for their country.

My dad almost did just that. When he was finally exfiltrated, he was 6' tall and weighed 112 pounds.

After a little time in Australia to regain strength and put some weight back on, they shipped him right back out to fight on the same fucking island.

Then the bomb and he wound up in Tokyo, assigned to assist an Army photographer. Their assignment was to take pictures of ace pilots in or around their planes. Really, they were just killing time until everybody got shipped home.

On many occasions, those superstar pilots spent their nights boozing it up and fucking locals and didn't show up for the photo shoots. To this day, there are multiple textbooks and coffee table books with pictures of famous pilots sitting in their cockpits but the actual person shown is my dad. He'd climb in the planes, the photographer would take a wide shot, and no one has ever really cared that it wasn't the actual pilot.

Some German soldiers lived in her home for 1 month and she and her family were forced to live in the basement and survive off of potato skins and other scraps. Once when she was cooking for the Germans she said something to one of them and he threw the boiling water on her arm. She died in 2013 of diabetes. My grandfather was a waist gunner in a b17 bomber. His plane was hit by AA fire and whilst he was getting his parachute on the plane broke in half. He fell out of the plane and was knocked out on a bulkhead on his way out after only having gotten one strap onto his parachute. By some miracle his parachute opened and he floated across the english channel into allied territory where a 12 year old girl found him unconscious in a field.

My great grandfather on my dad's side was with the Merchant seamen. His ship was torpedoed, he got out fine though.

My other great grandfather was a chef at military bases I believe. He made amazing food, I think it's where my late grandmother who I loved very dearly got it from.

My Grandfather was in the 12. SS Panzerdivision. Got shelled hard by arty driving through Caen in his halftrack. Saw some pretty awesome stuff, like Panzermeyer getting captured. At the end he travelled though half of europe and surrendered to the americans with the remains of the 12. SS.

They had the to run from the russians to get in american pow. Legend says that a russian officer blocked a bridge in his car to stop them from crossing a river to get to the americans. Some guy crushed the russian in his tank, the rest of the remaing guys then rushed over the bridge while the remaining russians rushed the tank and executed the crew on the spot. Another legend says, they didnt surrender all of their weapons but stayed under full arms for 2 days in capture because there were talks they would go stomp the russians together with the americans.
That old man is still alive, his legends will never die.

I dont know what the other grandad did, he is long dead, something with fighting partisans in jugoslavia. So he was probably just executing civillians all day erryday.

Paternal Granddad worked at the Vickers factory in Weybridge, fitting Leigh Lights onto Wellington bombers. He was made head of his department age 16 because all the senior members were killed in an air raid and he was the best that survived. He was too young to serve until min '45, but he wouldn't have been called up anyway because essential war work and all that.

Maternal Granddad was like 6. He didn't do much.

Interesting side note, my Stepdad's granddad was recruited in 1918. He was selected at the last minute to train as an artillery observer (can't remember the official term) who's job it would be to crawl into No-Man's-Land with a telephone and send fire reports back. Life expectancy for them was 2 weeks. He finished his training, wrote his will, prepared to die and then the war finished literally the day before he was due to ship out to France.
