You could also look at it the other way. It would be respectful to accept the salary (or use it to create a charity or some shit) as a sign of respect for the job that you are accepting. What we do have is multiple fields of in depth scientific study telling us that we are affecting the composition of the oceans and atmosphere, releasing carbon which is ordinarily trapped in the ground in massive quantities not seen since early volcanic periods on earth when it was much warmer.

The problem is that climate change is seen as a slow moving problem. It's not really an issue for the next few decades (I don't know that that is really even true any more). So people instead focus on creating jobs.
I think a lot of people would say that an extra 1,000 jobs today is better than an extra 3" of sea level 20 years from now. They are wrong, but I think a lot of people believe that.
