Plastic doesn't biodegrade and often can't easily be recycled.
That's bad for these reasons:
It's ugly. This beach would be more fun to be at if this yogurt cup weren't there, and we're producing more yogurt cups as time goes on.
It's unsustainable. Eventually we're going to run out of oil to make yogurt cups out of.
It's dangerous to wildlife. Otters and shit are stupid and they're going to get yogurt cups stuck on their stupid faces, causing them to starve.
It's wasteful. If this yogurt cup weren't here, it would be in a landfill. Landfills are a great way to make your property values go down and we keep making more of them because we're way better at making packaging than we are at getting rid of it.

Plastics has improved our way of life by making things smaller, lighter weight and easily manufactured and it takes a byproduct of oil refinement and turns it into something incredibly useful.
However, our oceans are drowning in plastic and marine animals and fish are getting poisoned and killed because of it, something we eat.

The only thing anybody can ever do to make it less of an issue is to simply recycle, which isn't very hard to do, I've been recycling since I could remember. I'm not saying people are scum of the Earth if they don't, but I do encourage people to do it.

This brings up a point I'd like to make about people in the 1st world "going green". It won't make a lick of difference, when you consider the 2nd world. China has vastly more production in small regions than the United States has altogether, and they're certainly not shy about just dumping their shit into the ocean, or into the air. No matter how much the US cleans up its industry, China alone produces enough garbage and carbon waste (1/3 of the world's carbon emissions) to fuck it up for everyone and isn't going to clean up in time for things to ever level off, if the global warming threshold is believed to be accurate. That's just China.

The bill is already past due because our roommates have burned our mail for heat for the last year, while we've been turning down the heat (to save pennies on it). They've told us they're paying the bill with the money we pay and we never bother to check up on them.

Alot of the plastic has broken down to plankton sized levels as well, meaning a simple net wont work. You would need to be straining the water basically, without it getting clogged and being able to service such a net thousands of miles off shore.

This may sound like insane babble, but I think we're close to finding a way to transfer the human mind into a robotic shell.
