My thought has been that there are no feral fluffies outside of cities because of that reason, that they mostly live in alleys behind restaurants and eat the garbage. Also this goes hand in hand with them breeding like crazy all the time.

This is highly personal headcanon, but I think it makes sense and solves a couple of problems related to fluffies:

Fluffy meat is unhealthy, especially in large quantities. Ratpoison acts slowly because otherwise they'd smell the poison from dead rats breath and know not to eat it themselves, but gradually working poison works so slowly that they don't know what in the end is killing them. This is relevant because there don't seem to be any rats in the fluffyverse, despite them inhabiting the same ecological niche.

So, all the rats have eaten fluffies until they've died, leaving the entire ecological niche open to the new helpless species that wouldn't have survived in the natural competition. This would also explain why fluffies aren't farmed for meat; a foalgarita or a fried foal now and then is okay, but a diet of fluffies would be destructive to ones health.

Are you not factoring how fast they reproduce? Because that's pretty much it, that's how there are 'feral herds' to begin with. Sure, they'll die, every comic I've seen shows that. Other thing to consider is that generations of fluffies born and raised in the wild would be more prepared for survival than regular abandoned fluffies in the wild. If they are feral, at least one must have had an encounter with a violent owner, so you'd probably have many of them running around. Finally, the whole "fluffy cleansing" has already happened before. I know many of you are kinda late to the party but there was a massive collab story called "The fall of Cleveland" which centers precisely on that. Okay so here's my grand question, something I can't justify about the fluffyverse and I'm hoping you guys come at from a different angle.

Why the fuck would hasbio make fluffies fertile in their default state? It's a shit business model that if the PETA raid didn't happen it would put them out of business anyway. Why pay to buy more fluffies when you can just make more of your own? Or why buy an official hasbio one when every toy store in town has their own private breeding program?

But the entire point of making a toy is that the company then makes money off of it. Think of the millions of dollars they invested in genetic modification. Here's what I think would be a solution to that glaring plothole

Fluffies, as originally sold, were sterile and sexually neutral, meaning they had no concept of reproduction in any way. This make sense if you think their primary market would be children, so of course their parents wouldn't want to have them do stuff they would have to explain to them. When this whole thing started, Hasbio must have had control on fluffies reproduction, so if you wanted yours to have foals, you had to take it to a Hasbio center, they had it inseminated, and then you took it back home, where the dam had their offsprings.

However, there must have been external labs out there who figured out how to "Jailbreak" fluffies, allowing them to reproduce like any other animal would, activating the part of the brain responsible for reproduction (and agresivity) and THESE were the fluffies PETA leaked.

At least that's how I see it that it would make the most sense. That's my headcannon. Since I'm also a drawfag from the fandom, I'm going to make sure to include this somewhere.

Families don't want to pick up a chocolate bar on the street and feed it to their little girl, so they don't just pick up ferals, or even abandoned fluffies (assuming they were abandoned for good reason), so the fluffy stores stay in business. Of course, there are many fluffies from the streets in the stores, just re-branded.

The big money behind the fluffy industry isn't the fluffy, but the food, sorry sticks, carriers, TV subscription, fluffy toys, safe-room renovation, etc.
