My paternal grandfather was conscripted into the Finnish army in WWII when USSR invaded.
At one point he killed a soviet officer with a point blank shot.
He frisked the officer's belongings, among them an odd soviet semi-automatic sidearm which had something akin to carbine ammunition.
The shell was like 9mm but it was angled down for the bullet which was maybe 5.56mm.
I don't remember the exact dimensions, but I got to shoot with it when I was 15 and visited my grandfather's summer cottage in the forest.
He didn't talk anything else about the war, just that he had ended up face to face with this fucker and drew his gun faster so he stayed alive.

On my mother's side, the family is from the far north, where the SS was based and held the line against the soviets.
Food shortage and famine, my grandmother's sister had small children and they were starving.
To save her children, she traded food for sex with SS-men.
It ended in new pregnancies and the end result was that there were now SS-offspring in the family.
It wasn't talked about in the family in that generation, but it came to light with her grandchildren.
It messed people up in the head, and it was pretty clear who was übermensch, because the family is pretty lappish, all the girls look like Björk, so a germanic aryan in the bunch stands out.
One by one these grandchildren died in suicide in their forties, they couldn't deal with the situation despite having loving families of their own and thriving farms.

Be my dad in 32 Battalion during the South African Rhodesian war

Stories he told me were rare but below is what I managed to squeeze outta him although when he told me most of the stoires he was very sad and regretfull or got visibly upset or disturbed.
