Get a trimmer, and trim it till it is long stubble, not short stubble, it will look good and then you wait till its longer and repeat, and over time it will fill out more and more so when you actually grow it out it wont look like this.
I had to do the same, it looked shit like yours but about a year of growing stubble and trimming it it filled out nice when i grew it.

Sure, I get what you are saying. A healthy growth of facial hair is always nice. Makes you feel like a proper guy. But it doesn't necessarily take that thick of a beard growth to be able to do a nicely groomed stubble, which is what suits the most men and gets the most tail. And also isn't a fashion trend like lumberjack beards.

But then again - the ability to grow a big beard is often associated with high testosterone, which is good in many ways, but too much and you'll likely be bald before you're 40. I'd rather not be able to grow any kind of beard and still have a good head of hair when I'm 80.
