I was born poor, spent most of the my life poor, and only now am starting to pull myself out of that rut thanks to spending a couple of years studying real estate investments and market conditions and making a career out of it.

However, despite all my hard work, I'm not blind to the fact that simple luck could have prevented all that. Before the ACA, I was uninsurable for years because of a birth defect. Any hospitalization could have landed me in debt so deep that I could have never paid it off. I had no disposable income whatsoever. No savings, no room for plans. I had to juggle bills to keep the lights on. Any poorly-timed car breakdown could have cost me my job, and thus my home. I could have gotten a girl pregnant, had a kid to take care of like my dad did.

There are *so many things* that could have happened that would have essentially locked me into poverty for live, or at least for many more years (open up even further chances for raw luck). Thankfully, none did.

Yet, as I find myself entering the world of the middle and upper classes for the first time, I'm shocked by how out of touch so many of these people are. I hear this "bootstrap" bullshit so goddamn often from those who have never in their lives experienced what it's actually like to be poor, and it's deeply frustrating. As somebody who has actually done it, or is currently doing it at least, I wish more people would understand that hard work and a sharp mind is not all it takes.

Is that your perspective, having been born rich, lived rich? I'm not underselling your achievement. I'm sure you worked hard. But, having always been a rich guy: how do you feel about the poor?

Yeah, I guess I can understand that. It's hard not to be a bit incredulous, though! I remember being SO fucking proud of myself just for reaching $5k in saving. It took me almost two to do it. I had to make huge cuts to my lifestyle, consult with a financial planner, cut out all extraneous expenses, and I still have a couple major setbacks from a huge vet bill and a pricey car repair, but when I finally got to that point I felt like I could do anything.
