OP I'm currently in Thailand (isaan) and been here for 14 months now. How long do you plan on staying? You will get a 1 month tourist visa in the airport which you can renew by leaving the country and coming back, but if you do that a few times they will not let you back in. Renew the visa at an immigration office costs 1900 baht, that will get you another month. You can then renew it again for 2 months at the same price, after that I don't know . They're cracking down on tourist visas and being real bastards about it.

Pattaya is best bang for your buck. Avoid walking street as it's the most expensive area. $2000 is not that much for a month you could easily spend it in a week. Especially if it includes accommodation, where do you plan on staying? Only take the women to short time hotels and don't carry a lot of cash. OP, some words about visas for Thailand because someone earlier fucked up. I guess you're American which means that you can do a few things depending on your plans. As a Yank you can get a 30 day **VISA EXEMPTION** when you arrive, NOT a 'tourist visa' as someone said. suggest that you do it that way to start and see what you think after that time. You need to leave every 30 days for a few hours, then come in and be stamped in again, but now they are getting sticky with that so maybe you can do three times tops before they want a proper tourist visa. Tourist visas. there is a new type of multi-entry tourist visa but means you have to show a shitload of money in your bank and provide all sorts of other shit.
Thailand only does those of the old single-entry tourist visa now. You can get one from most SE Asian countries, but most ppl come on a couple of 30 day exemptions and there are bus companies which will ferry you to Cambodia or Laos for the day so you can do an out
/in and get your next 30 day. Eventually you'll have to either go to Penang (the easiest) or Laos and get a proper single-entry tourist visa. That will give you 60 days on entry which can be extended for another 30 days for 1900 baht in-country. Then off to Penang again when that runs out if you want to stay.You'll probably only get two of those visa before they warn you to get a proper long-stay visa,which would be the 'ED' in your case.
All that should give you say, 6 months to learn the ropes and decide if you want to stay longer. If you do, then you need to find an educational establishment to accept you to get your ED visa. There's the American University here which you could try for, and many others.
