The government takes this money (1.4T or so every year) and fucking spends it. Then they write an IOU and put it in the "social security fund". Yes, the fund is 100% empty.

Right now we pay out in Social Security benefits about 1.3T, so a bit less than we take in.

That is going to change soon with the baby boomers. SS is going to be in the red (paying out more than it takes in) in two years.

Remember that empty fund with a bunch of IOUs in it? The government will need to pretend it is full of money by either taking more of your money, or giving out less money.

Either way it is going to be a disaster.

Dummy. SS takes in money each year and pays that out. It isn't a savings account with a fixed amount that runs dry. The money paid in by workers next year gets transferred to those on SS benefits next year. This means it can not "run out of money" or "all been spent". It always has new incoming revenue.

Having a budget deficit in SS for some period of time, which is what might actually happen, is not at all unsolveable. EVERY SINGLE GOVERNMENT PROGRAM BESIDES SS has been running at a deficit for decades. SS is the only thing the government does that's been running in the black. The idea that if SS goes into the red everything collapses is nonsense.

You just borrow money (deficit spend), you print money, or you raise taxes until you get over the babyboomer hump. And once you get past that hump it's clear sailing for SS. And no, boomers will not be living significantly longer than their parents. That's a myth.

And all you need to do to get over the babyboomer hump is eliminate the cap on SS taxes. Bernie Sanders was proposing that and Clinton said she was open to it, along with other options. That solves the entire SS budget issue right there. But there are also other ways to address the issue too.

It is only an unresolvalbe crisis if you want it to be. Unfortunately, it just happens that one of our political parties right now wants it to be.
