I can't imagine many people would ever have a reason not to be happy to see a paramedic, to be honest. Here in Australia we've been having issues with paramedics getting assaulted by patients that are high as a kite, to the point that some states have new regulations about police and paramedic coordination. Define happy? I take away pain. I bring a sense of calm and relief. People might not be happy with whats happening to themselves or their loved ones, but they're sure as fuck glad i'm there.

In my suburban job I have police assistance on almost every single call I run. It's a huge help, my city job is a little different. If i ever need them though, or if shit gets really fucked up quickly I have a emergency button on my radio that sends them directly to my location/scene.

I'm not interested in working a job where I can't see the results of the effort I put in. I also don't want to be stuck in the same place day in day out, I like to be on my feet.

It may sound a bit cliche, but I want to do my bit to help the people who need it. I think being a paramedic or a firefighter would be an extremely rewarding profession.

Before now I've been a bit lost with what I wanted to do, but I've narrowed it down to those options.

This job is extremely unrewarding. All three are really. We get paid shit and we really don't see results from the effort we put it. Firefighting is the only one where I can really say you instatiouolsy see positive results from your actions.

The largest issue with it is that the general public really dosen't understand what you do. Its pretty much exclusively personally rewarding. My ex for the first 3 weeks that we were dating didn't realize I do anything more than pick people up and drive them to the hospital.

I, as a volunteer firefighter, must disagree. If you (>>608217543) want to see results you should be builder not a firefighter. First of all: most of the calls are more or less "janitor jobs" (oil spil, open doors, trees fell on a road,...). Second: everything touched by fire is lost, you can't undo this, you just prevent it to get worse. And if you rescue someone you get hardly any feedback on how he/she is doing, if it got better, who the person were and so on.

But there is the 1%, rare occasions, were it matters, were you get an altruistic award: that undescribable feel after you did something great.

Regardless, if I really cared about the income I would have gone to nursing school, challenged my state and gotten my Pre-hospital RN. I really just don't care all that much about the income.

On the note of the vest, I never have to wear a patch like that. Though I do always have to wear a vest. It's not really depressing, its just the world we live in.
