Basically other businesses, whether it be grocery stores or any other retail outlets offer better starting wages than Walmart and the work is generally easier. I work at Walmart unfortunately but havent been there long. My Walmart for the most part seems very understaffed, yet everyone I know says our walmart is pretty nice compared to others. The thing is, Walmart/management could easily afford to hire more people but that would cost more money. Why hire 3 associates when you can have 1 associate do the work of those three? This is also why the turn around rate at our walmart is high. No one sticks around to get butt fucked by being over worked for 20 cents over minimum wage. This in turn makes our managers have to pick up the slack. Once the managers cant keep up then corporate has a problem. This raise is most likely a give in to keep some associates around. I'm sure there's some red tape included to the raise that we dont see but yeah this is all my guess.

Many people in the service industry are students trying to pay rent along with tuition. Others are simply stuck there because there are no other jobs around. I held #1 in sales (district wide) for three months before I became eligible for benifits, and I was working so many hours that regulations were about to force promote me to full time. I work for walmart. I learned today of this raise. I think it's cool. The company itself is realizing it's not just the customers. Without the employees theres nothing the custoemrs can buy. The place would be a wreck. They are simply saying "Thank You" I look forward to my $9 raise and next year it hitting $10. I will alos be applying for a small management possition at the end of next month and that pays above $13 an hour. I don't see why you are mad? I work hard here, working at walmart doesnt mean youre a window licking door greater. I work in grocery and have to stock thousands of items ina specific place every day. I have to deal with ignorant customers. I do believe I bring a lot to the table. When I get caught up in my work I have to go help other departments get caught up in thiers. I believe the raise is a good thing for Walmart to do to boost morale. And it helps employees like me, who have to scrape the small paycheck just to pay bills.

I spent two years in community college for my basics, paid in full with academic scholarships. Then I had my engineering degree at University of Louisville paid in full with more scholarships.

I ended up about $1500 short the first semester at UofL and that was the only dime I paid out of pocket.

Thanks to the job I worked full time that matched my pay and sent it to my uni, I graduated with more money than when I started.

First off walmart has consistently paid most of their entry level workers above minimum wage. with that being said this pay will only come after 6 months and even fewer associates are going to get full time. Not to mention the "my share" quarterly associate bonuses and discount cards are probably gonna get cut too.
