This is WWE revisionist history. HHH was never punished for the curtain call.
1. It was at a house show, not on TV.
2. It was not "the first time WWE admitted it was scripted", McMahon had done so in the late 1980s to skirt the state athletic commissions, and later in the early 90s during his steroid and sexual harassment trials.
3. The fans would've simply thought it was part of a storyline.
4. Triple H's career actually accelerated after the curtain call.
5. Triple H was not booked to win the 96 KOTR, Jake Roberts was. Austin ultimately won from a last minute booking change (probably because of Jake's substance abuse problems backstage), and even Austin's career stalled after KOTR '96, as KOTR is usually a curse more than a blessing.
5. The curtain call was in May of 1996. Triple H then got Curt Hennig as his on-screen manager and went on to win the Intercontinental Championship in October 1996, and held it for 4 months before dropping it to The Rock. Then Triple H got Mr Hughes and later Chyna, won KOTR '97, and formed D-Generation X with Shawn Michaels.
6. People frequently cite the pig pen match with the Godwinns as HHH's punishment, but that actually happened a year before the curtain call in 1995. His post-curtain call feuds were Mero (winning the IC), The Rock (lost IC), Goldust (who was a midcarder at the time), and Mankind.

There was no punishment for the curtain call.
