we have almost identical "front tails" (I put it in quotation marks because I have trouble sliding them too, but it's allright because we will get them) and I can't even backtail at all, not even stall.

that ledge wasn't waxed. i can get them to slide but they are kind of scary. they're a bit easier on higher obstacles. every time i try them on a small curb i end up slipping out. you have to get used to the balance. that's the part i can't get with back tails. one time i slipped out on a back tail and body slammed the box at my local park. i don't know how people hold them, especially on waxed obstacles. it's weird that i can back lip, though because it's kind of a similar trick

i actually find back tails easier to get into. i had to force the 90 ollie for front tails when learning them. to get the stall, you work your way up. do a 50-50 stall, turn into tail; then 5-0 stall, turn into tail. finally, ollie into tail stall

>>
I was really big in skating back in the 2000s. Skated a lot, was pretty decent, had a lot of fun.

What happened? That 90s/early 00s culture was so much better than whatever this is now. Maybe because i'm not really a part of it anymore. But it's like all anyone does is show up at the park with a gopro and try to get instagram clips or vlog
>>
>>3017012
Why are you so worried with what other skaters are doing
>>
>>3017639
because i dont have any friends and i don't want to drive almost 2 hours to a park to engage with people who don't understand skate culture in the same fashion i do

>>
>>3015600

>>3018425
yeah this is it, I'm really shit at spinning backside in general for some reason though so I should probably work on that too
>>
>>3018466
You gotta swing your shoulders with your board as you scoop.
>>
For those asking from a couple threads ago:

According to an insta post, at least part of (the game of skate) Dime MTL jam will be streamed on insta
>>
>>3018562
I've tried that and I always land with my popping foot off. Only few I've landed was when I'd done a pop shuvit and just turned my body with it, but they were sketch as fuck
>>
>>3019000
Your shoulders have to be over the board while turning with the board. Its harder to get right than it sounds. But its really not that hard. Don't lean into the turn.
>>

we don't all live in copenhagen or some shit, i have a shitty driveway too rough to skate on in the middle of nowhere, usa

>>
>>3018171
i learned them with a pivot first. if you can, find a spot that'll allow your wheels to slide. even if you don't like pivots, it's helpful to learn it that way. once you get used to that motion, you can pretty much think of it as a pivot in the air to get them complete. it's all about getting used to the feeling of the rotation

>>
>>3026094
you just have to get used to balancing. i'd recommend loosening your trucks rather than tightening them because it'll force you to balance and it's in a way easier to ride because you can turn by leaning as opposed to tic-tacing
>>
>>3026109
it's cool when riding bcoz it's easier to turn yeah but i have problems even standing on it

Just got back from my first sesh with them. I swapped insoles for a thicker set from another pair of adidas and after that they were perfect. Was skating alot of flatground and i had to look really hard to find any wear. And the straps secure the shoe a million times better than laces. This is the best shoe I've skated and I'd put money on them lasting until next june at the least. Pic related is after 3 hours of kickflips and impossibles. 10/10 plan on copping again.

use the ball of your back foot to pop in the center of the tail, straight downward. don't focus too much on the pop. it'll happen naturally as you jump up and the board will come up with you. i've noticed people try their hardest to push down on the tail when all they really need to do is just jump up. jump up and the board will follow. do rocket ollies if you can't level it out. get used to it and refine it

Barcelona, Spain has a reputation for being extremely good. Subject to skater pilgrimage kind of good.

Some cities in Brazil are also supposedly great but it's foreigner unfriendly in the sense of an everpresent petty criminal element; regardless, seemingly half the female pro competitors are Brazilian, so there's got to be a great scene down there. People who've been to Berlin say Berlin is great, but I think it's just rubes falling in love with their first actually cosmopolitan European city...

Even though it was cheaper online and I would've gotten better parts, I went to my local shop today and got a board built for me. I'm getting back in after a decade of not skating and I gotta start all over. At least I work nights so the parks are all mine while the kids are in school.

I'll post my board tomorrow after a few catch-up runs.

Bought a longboard like 4 years ago back in highschool back when it was cool around my school to have a longboard.

Now, in college, I have begun to realize how much of my short trips can be covered by a board instead of my car. I drove from my dorm to my campus (literally 5 blocks) every day, but I can totally just do that on a longboard. The roads are really flat and relatively smooth so I could just cruise.

Thing is, I'm heavy set and I think I weigh too much for the board. I push as hard as I can 8 or 9 times just to roll about 10 feet then come to a stop and when I see people online they're just cruising. Is this just a problem of weight?

Or it's probably the bearings/speedrings/wheels because I haven't used this thing in 4 years and it's been sitting in a closet?
>>
How the hell do I get over curbs on a longboard
>>
>>3062757
that shit is DEFINITELY your bearings.
>>
>>3062779
God bless, I'll head over to the local skate shop and get new bearings/ask someone to change them cause I'm a retard who doesn't know how to skate

I just assumed it's cause I weigh like 250 lbs and that was my issue.
>>
I have a longboard and a skateboard, but I don't know how to ride either. I'm thinking about going to my local skate shop but I'm worried they're just going to tell me both my boards are shit and to kill myself and never skate or something

I can ollie flat pretty decent, but I cannot for the life of me do it moving/onto a curb. I crouch way down but I dont get how all these other people I see ollie basically standing straight up
>>
>>3063849
crouching way down isn't really good. just get a nice pop by flicking your back toes on your tail or if you use more of your foot, do whatever works to get a nice pop. then you wanna suck your knees in toward your chest. don't like bring them all the way to your chest at first, just work your way up there.

crouching down makes your ollies less fluid since it takes a while to get yourself situated down to that position.
>>
>>3063858
Yeah, that's the issue I'd been seeing. When I was practicing flat in my garage, I was taking like 15 seconds once I got on the board to set up and just jump.

I think I just need to try and do em frequently to not let myself crouch
>>
>>3063863
Don't practice standing. Do it rolling. You'll have more stability.
>>
>>3025769
im okay with new deck and new shoes because it doesnt take long to land something, but new fucking wheels is the worst. its like learning how to skate again

>>
>>3063863
you get a more explosive pop when you squat down and pop straight away

also try to ollie over some things before ollieing up a curb, like start with a pencil or something work your way up to an icecream tub
>>
>>3064795
I wear shoes with toe caps so new shoes and grip is like unflippable. But i feel you about wheels. Not necessarily new ones but just different shapes and formulas than youre used to. I tried to slide soft wheels and almost died. Same with conicals.

Landed a couple of back boardslides on a little rail today. Pretty stoked as I have never had the balls to skate a rail. Also making some progress on my frontside transition skating.
I need to start skating hips, but they really terrify me. I also have a huge problem doing stalls in transition. I can get into and out of a 50-50, but my weight always stays inside the bowl.
Got the day off work tomorrow. Going to skate hard, pop some tricks and never forget to smile.

>>
>>3068567
go outside and practice while rolling along, move your front and back foot back so it doesnt hang off the top of your board, suck your knees up to your chest when you jump
>>
>>3068632
The latter two things make sense, but why on earth would I start with rolling when I can't ollie properly when stationary?
>>
>>3068632
>>3068641
Also it's wet outside the past two days
>>
>>3068641
practicing while rolling makes for better progression, for me at least.

>>3068326
dont be afraid to just push scooter riders over if they're in the way
>>
>>3068648
Makes sense, was gonna try setting a 2x4 board up on edge and going over it on the road in front of my house, but as I said above, it's been raining and I heard skating in wet conditions is bad for bearings
>>
>>3066776
'no'
>>
>>3068261
all pro company decks are almost identical

anybody who says a specific company makes bad decks likely had a bad experience once and denounces them for good now
>>
>>3068641
You'll have more stability. Also dont study yourself to see what you're doing wrong. Study the pros to see what you arent doing right.

>>3068667
Concave, shape, and wheelbase tend to differ even between brands that source their blanks from the same place. I recently gave away an anti hero to my friend because the concave and tail were too steep and i just couldn't catch it or pop it consistently. Switched back to my worn out primitive which is shallower and it feels so much better. Got a fresh primi gripped up in my trunk just waiting for the old one to crack.
>>
>>3068707
Adding the possibility of speed wobbles gives me more stability?

And I really don't get how people seem to have the board glued to their feet
>>
>>3068337
yeah, its a small piece of the general park across the street.
>>
Lads, after a year of attempting I just landed 3 kickflips. Turns out I knew the trick all along ( for at least 5 months!!!) but was too much of a pussy to land it. I drank a bunch of beers and suddenly kickflips are doable.
Next up backside flips!
>>
>>3068708
I dont give a fuck what you think of my advice, tubby. My ollies dont suck. You're probably gonna stop skating next week anyway.
>>
>>3068744
Half cab flips are easier.
>>
>>3068769
>tubby
Lad I already said I know I'm fat, there's no need for that

I'm just asking you a fucking question about why rolling gives more stability, cause that seems counterintuitive as shit. Chill the fuck out
>>
>>3068780
you don't have to go lightning fast, just push like once or twice. if you're still wobbling then tighten your trucks or practice your balance
>>
>>3068794
The place where I wobble is shifting my front food from parallel with the board from pushing to perpendicular for coasting
>>
>>3068780
Nothing pisses me off quicker than someone asking for advice and arguing the advice they receive. I overreacted but you should work on that because most people find that shit very annoying.
>>

>>
>>3068567
Yeeew. Landed some nice ollies m8.
Maybe try bending your knees when you land so you stick to your board. Also you can try tic-tacs when you land to make sure you just stick to the board. Other than that, you got the ollie down my man. Just keep at it. When I learnt to ollie while rolling, it was like I had to relearn the entire trick again. Learning to ollie is fucking hard, but in the end it's all just muscle memory and weight distribution. So practice away.
>>

>>
>>3073135
In order of importance of quality in my eyes:
Bearings
Trucks
Decks
Wheels
>>
>>3073140
i dont agree, as long as bearings roll then you're fine, especailly for beginners, but even advanced skaters.

IMO importance is
trucks
deck
wheels
bearings
>>
>>3073151
I think bearings/trucks are interchangeable based on if you're doing more street skating or just cruising around town. I definitely wouldn't put decks above bearings, cause you can get away with a 50 dollar deck from a local shop pretty easy

I'm still a beginner, so bearings that will make me go one speeds faster wont make much a difference anyway.

What I meant was, is buying $20 amazon truck and wheels fine for a beginner, or are decent trucks necessary for street skating and beginner-intermediate tricks.

just regular trucks and wheels

And i get that you're dollar is ass right now but the fact that you cant put 25$ a month away for 4 months while you push the wood you have right now is pathetic and leads me to believe you have shit job and are not as fiscally mature as you claim. I make less than all my friends that don't skate and am able to maintain a good savings and buy wood whenever the fuck i want and still pay my bills. And i buy my wood online.

There's a song in German with the hook being "you're a skater, right? do a kickflip". I always sing it when I see skaters comin thru

My two of my locals stock hookups. It's sick because sometimes they'll have sales to get rid of old stock. I've picked up akiko for $65, and the angel one too. I skated the angel the one because it was an 8 and the akiko was 8.5 so that was way too big for me so it's hanging as of right now.
