The only thing that would bring in new fans, at this point, is controversy. CGI has allowed even normal-sized men to look like they can pull off the physical stunts that, in the past, required a steroided-up Hulk Hogan. But every new medium in the past, from at least 1950s rock & roll onward, has gotten its biggest boost from moral guardians declaring it Satanic or otherwise evil. Then their teenage kids got into it as a means of subverting their parents, and then the younger kids got into it as a means of being just like their cool cousins. Cena and Lesnar cannot save WWE, because kids are used to attractive but human-sized men doing stunts that, in the 1980s, would have required a Lesnar. Have you seen the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Mark Ruffalo gets turned into something bigger and stronger than Lesnar. But turning against TV-PG can save them. Going TV-MA, or even the smaller change of TV-14, can save them. Having one group of heels representing outright racists, while another, equally vile group of heels act like Antifa clones, and having John Cena stomp both of them into the ground, might piss off the cultural daughters of soccer moms enough to save WWE. But on their own, now that the movies can turn 98-pound nerds into musclemen, no muscleman can save WWE on his own.
