No form of media is one-size fits all, especially when it comes to protagonists. There is not a single archetype that a hero HAS to be. Luke Skywalker is a wimpy pussy moisture farmer who has to be helped and saved all the time and who doesn't become good at anything until three films in and even then, his big heroic revelation is "I will not fight you." Luke Skywalker is also one of the most enduring heroes of all time. Alien is full of big, tough macho space marine types who all get fucking murdered until all that's left is Ellen Ripley. As someone else mentioned, Spider-Man starts as a wimpy teenage loser.

And no, because wrestling used to be a certain way doesn't make it immune from this. No form of media is immune to being able to tell multiple kinds of stories with multiple kinds of heroes. Just because something used to be a certain way doesn't mean it has to be that way forever, that's the kind of thinking that leads to stagnation and which is why WWE is in the creative shitter right now because so much of their booking is lazy crutches from decades ago.
