They both went to shit past the 1970s.
It was a lot like later WCW. Terrible main event scene, but most things on the undercard were great. Old lazy main eventers content to float by on the bare minimum (ultimately killing the territory completely) while the underneath guys still tried to keep the crowds entertained and coming back for more.
The Jr Heavyweight guys and comedy from the 70s and 80s were great tho. Very entertaining at what they did. Comedy guys were hilarious and did old Britsh panto style silliness as buffer matches for the srs sport workrate Jr Hvt and the big fat lazy cunt main eventers. Jr Hvy guys deserve far more credit than they get these days for innovating athletic/workrate style wrestling, those guys had a huge hand influencing the Japanese Jr Hwt style that came to prominence in the later 80s, which then went on to influence the American scene of the 90s/2000s. Jushin Thunder Liger was sent to England in the 70s/80s on his young boy excursion and that is where he picked it up and became the GOAT at it.
Listen to Regal talk about old BritWres as much as you can, there is a great wealth of interesting history there.
Also here is a really fun and interesting doc on the old BritWres world;
