Can someone explain why Rusev's first feud back from injury wasn't against Mahal for the title? The story basically writes itself, makes perfect sense and would be something fresh.

Instead we get a rehash of a shitty feud from a couple of years ago that no one wanted to see, with a silly "MURICA vs everyone" story shoehorned in.

What am I missing?

You already said it, because it makes perfect sense. WWE is nothing but missed opportunities and hates doing things that make sense. Rusev should have been the one who got the main event push.
