Before IWGP, NJPW was founded by Inoki who won the NWF Heavyweight Championship. And so that became the defult NJPW world championship. Until they devloped the International Wrestling Grand Prix tournament. The winner became the IWGP Heavyweight Champion. This then would become the main Heavyweight Championship in NJPW. Nakamura is the one who actually retired the NWF championship by unifying it with the IWGP championship.
