Filling Austin's shoes was big work, but by mid-2000 Rock had done it. WWF was drawing even more dimes than peak 98-99 Austin. By the time Austin returned, I think it's fair to say they were equal.

Angle obviously. Triple H was also quite good at this time. People let their hatred blind them. (He's even decent now compared to much of the roster. He just needs to self-indulge less and make his matches shorter.)

I'd give Austin the tiniest edge over Rock. As good as Rock was, it was still catchphrase-dependent. Austin, especially on his return for injury, hunting the culprit, had a seriousness and intensity about him that hadn't been seen before. His voice was even more gruff. The audience hung on every single word out of his mouth.
