What would happen to WWE ratings if starting from next week they

literally nothing, they dug their hole too deep now its impossible to get out. all the old viewers are either UFC, an hero, or NJPW

The ratings would briefly pop, then everyone would realize it's the same dumb show where nothing matters plot-wise, and they'd go back down the tubes again.

That's a perfect moment that shows how hardcore situations make a feud, a story, more powerful and memorable, but for the life of me I can't remember something like that happening since the Cena era began.

They can't do it out of the blue. There's gotta be one or two guys pioneering it, creating a bleed through of TV-14 moments on a PG show. If they just dive into it they'll lose their family audience quicker than they can gain their edgy male audience back.

That is the question. For one a lot of that was kinda by chance and on accident (like his 3:16 promo) and today with all the scripting and bad writing he would probably get lost in the shuffle no matter his talent.

The only thing that changed by Austin getting over in WWE was it gave the company the edge to beat WCW. Without Austin WWE would've lost the Monday Night Wars badly and we'd all be complaining about Nitro and Thunder being shit week after week. Austin would've probably gone back to WCW or ECW and become a star there because everyone knew he was going to be, especially Paul Heyman.

They've had some really good storylines in the PG era (Jericho/Michaels, Punk/Hardy, Summer of Punk) but usually manage to throw away most of them thanks to Vince's ADHD riddled brain.

It's hard to tell, because society as a whole takes itself too seriously now. I partially blame WWE for this, because they pioneered laissez-faire morality in television in many ways, and abandoning that responsibility for a decade helped lay the groundwork for liberal fascists to make everyone walk on eggshells.

For example, any TV-14 jokes made in today's environment would have to be prefaced with "Now I'm not ____ but..." disclaimers.
