I know this sounds really dumb, but how do the storylines work in WWE?

>rarely got to watch it, really enjoyed it but on a shallow level not following any stories or backgrounds

I really want to go back and watch through the attitude era and then onward in full, following the stories and drama.
How would I go about doing that?

Does Raw and Smackdown coincide with each other in terms of wrestlers and story?
