Has this title ever meant less than it does right now? Smackdown is the better show but it's still the less important show in the company's eyes. The fruit rollup belt was treated as more important at both SummerSlam 2016 and WrestleMania 33 by virtue of Ram being a bigger priority to the company than Smackdown. Boreton now holds the title and he hasn't been relevant in years. Jinder is based but they're just using him as a filler feud before Boreton feuds with Corbin.

The WWE certainly takes the universal title more seriously, but the WWE title has a longer history.
Sort of like the WCW aka nwa belt. If I was a mark for myself I would rather have the wwe belt personally.

Just the state of the plebs in that number one contenders match devalues the title. One of the biggest jobbers in the company becoming #1 contender with zero build devalues it even more. If Jinder actually wins the US title will go back above it in prestige.
