You have to organize spots and direct the flow, basically you have to know just as much about the match as the wrestlers

It isn't, but part of the job is knowing time cues and talking to folks in the back. There's also preventing injury, checking if there's anything seriously wrong and knowing certain emergency procedures.

its not. if you listen to shoot interviews with guys that refed they always say something like how they were a ring crew guy and then one day the promoter put a ref shirt on them and how they thought the matches were a shoot

I reffed an indy show once and you have to keep alert at all times so you don't get in the way which is difficult because it's so fucking boring of a job to do.
