Yokozuna Debut Kisenosato:
Kisenosato was promoted to the 72nd Yokozuna in history, the previous one had been Kakuryu, promoted in March 2014. He is the 41st since Showa Era and the 10th in Heisei Era. Kisenosato is the first Rikishi from Tagonoura Beya to reach the top rank in Sumo as well as the 4th from Ibaraki Prefecture, following Inazuma, Hitachiyama and Minanogawa. He is the first Japanese born Rikishi to make his Yokozuna debut since the promotion of Wakanohana in July 1998 and the first active Japanese Yokozuna since Takanohana in January 2003. He reached the Yokozuna rank in 89 tournaments since his sumo debut, which makes him the 3rd slowest within the 41 Yokozuna since the Showa Era.
Taking 73 tournaments since his promotion to Makuuchi, he is the slowest within the 41 Yokozuna since Showa Era. Taking 31 tournaments since his promotion to Ozeki, he is the 3rd slowest within the 41 Yokozuna since Showa Era. Being 30 years and 6 months of age at the time of his promotion, he is the 4th oldest within the 21 Yokozuna who had their sumo debut since 1958.

For the first time since the 2000 March Grand Sumo Tournament, there are 4 active Yokozuna; Takanohana, Akebono, Musashimaru and Wakanohana.
>>
Ozeki Terunofuji:
Once again after the November Grand Sumo Tournament 2016 and personally for the 4th time, Terunofuji is Ozeki Kadoban and faces a possible demotion. Following Kotoshogiku in the last tournament, this is in total the 139th time since the 1969 July Grand Sumo Tournament.

* For the first time since July 2014, there are 2 active Ozeki (Kisenosato and Kotoshogiku).

* For the first time since July 2007 the number of Ozeki decreased by 2 people; Hakuho (promoted to Yokozuna) and Tochiazuma (Retired).

Sekiwake Tamawashi:
Tamawashi holds the Sekiwake Rank for the 2nd tournament in a row and stays in Sanyaku for the 3rd.

Sekiwake Return Takayasu:
Takayasu has been re-promoted to Sekiwake after 2 tournaments and is in Sanyaku for the 5th consecutive time.

Sekiwake Kotoshogiku:
Kotoshogiku has been demoted to Sekiwake after 33 tournaments. Returning to the rank he held in September 2011. He is the first Ozeki demoted to the Sekiwake Rank since Kotooshu in January 2014. Since the Showa Era, this has been recorded 30 times from 25 Rikishi. Concerning the official rule changes regarding the demotion of Ozeki in 1969, a Rikishi of Ozeki Rank demoted to Sekiwake Rank is recorded 19 times from 16 Rikishi.

* For the first time since March 2014, there are 3 active Sekiwake (Goeido, Kotooshu, Tochiozan).

* For the first time since the Spring Tournament in 1949, (where Azumafuji had been promoted to Yokozuna while Ozeki Shionoumi had been demoted to Sekiwake), we have a Yokozuna promotion and demotion of an Ozeki in the same tournament.
>>
Komusubi Return Mitakeumi:
Mitakeumi is re-promoted to the Komusubi Rank after 2 tournaments.

Komusubi Shodai:
Shodai, who had his Sekiwake debut in the last tournament, had been directly promoted from the Maegashira Rank, skipping Komusubi. He is now demoted to Komusubi, holding this rank for the first time. This previously happened to Kotoyuki in July last year.

Makuuchi Debut Ura:
Ura is the 6th Rikishi from Kise Beya to make his Makuuchi debut since the present Shisho founded it on the first of December 2003.
The previous, Akiseyama, debuted in March last year. He is the 21st Rikishi from Osaka post WWII, following Daishomaru's promotion in March last year. Ura is the first ever former student of Kwansei Gakuin University as well as 89th former Japanese student sumo amateur following Hokutofuji and Ishiura, both promoted in November last year, reaching the first league. Taking only 7 tournaments since his sumo debut (excluding Makushita Tsukedashi) he ties the record of the 7th fastest since 1958.

Makuuchi Return Daieisho:
Daieisho returns to Makuuchi after 3 tournaments following his demotion in September.

Makuuchi Return Kyokushuho:
Kyokushuho returns after 2 tournaments.

Makuuchi Return Tokushoryu:
Tokushoryu returns to Makuuchi after 3 tournaments following his demotion in September.

not proper
>>
>>2359960
nevermind, its proper, just very poor quality for the first half

pretty standard day. i think i'll root for terunofuji this basho.
>>
>>2359967
It's been hard to watch Terunofuji lately, he's been so injured. Seems like he's got a solid start to this one though, hope he's getting better. When he's healthy he's unstoppable.
>>
>>2359960
Can't pin down that Ishiura
>>
Sumo is so much more fun when Hakuho isn't steamrolling everybody. You can see the believe in the lower ranked guys now, they all believe they have a chance at the title.
>>
>>2360656
On the one hand it's nice because like you said it seems everyone has this new vigor like they know they have an actual shot at things but on the other hand it's fun to watch Hakuho go haam on other rikishis.
>>
I'll share few vids/channels that you should sub to get all the vids:

Kinta's channel as already linked above:
https://www.youtube.com/user/Kintamayama
he is always first to post fights. quality can be shit because he captures them off streams. no translation and no commentary.

Jason's channel:
https://www.youtube.com/user/JasonsinJapan
he posts after Kinta and only posts top matchups (usually Yokozuna + interesting ones). He gives some commentary. Quality of vids is better since he lives in Japan.

Robert Mensing's channel:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMtYiJ-OIGY
He's the last to post but his videos are the best because he rips the whole daily 25 min NHK Summo summary. NHK has the professional commentary. If you don't care about getting the scores first, this is the one to watch.

Anyway, took me a while to find these channels. Enjoy.
>>

>>
Noobie here with some questions

Does the salt ever affect footing?

Whats the ring made of?

How far from the center line can the wrestlers get?

When a smaller wrestler is going against what seems like a much larger wrestler does his game plan change meaningfully? Like will he try for a specific scoring method?

Do people still make those DBZ after effects edits of matches?
>>
>>2364397
No

Mud I think? You can probably find a vid about it, I don't know much about it.

If you mean at the start, as far back as they want to go. As long as they're centered behind it they can do that.

Yep, Watch Ura matches. Basically everyone is bigger than him. He uses his smaller self to get under his opponent mostly.

No
>>
Day 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DexKL3MSnI
>>
>>2364397
>Whats the ring made of?
Here You can see how it is built
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sd3Lyvja9g
>>
>>2364397
The salt is swept up well most of the time, some is occasionally missed though and can affect footing. More importantly the dohyo is made of natural clay. The clay has to be watered regularly to prevent cracking and keep the correct consistency, this does affect the footing as some days the dohyo will be moist and some days very dry.

You can start anywhere behind the line, if you wish. You will occasionally see rikishi start much farther back.

Small guys definitely have to pull out the tricks, mainoumi is probably the most famous example. His nickname translation is roughly "the department store of techniques". As they can't generally fight head to head you'll frequently see them circling the opponent or trying distraction techniques like clapping near the opponents head.
>>
great san'yaku matches today. Sokokurai!!!
>>
So I only know one guy and that's Hakuho. Why isn't he fighting?
>>
>>2364681
He'll always be near the end of the video since hes of the highest rank, and they're shown in order of rank. His bout starts at 10:45 in the Day 3 video posted a couple up.

Thanks for the answers guys I just had three more

Are the E. Honda slaps offensive or defensive, they sorta look like they're mostly positioning from what I've seen

What's the average life span of a wrestlers career? I assume around mid 30's you'll usually start to see a decline?

How often do these events occur? Are they all reffered to as Boshi?
>>
>>2365289
The tsuppari slapping can be used both ways. It's completely legal to face slap too, though somewhat frowned upon.

If I recall, the average age of retirement is 32, but you'll see a few more older guys in the higher divisions because there's a high drop out rate early on.

The grand tournaments, or Honbasho, are 15 days long and happen every second month. http://www.sumo.or.jp/EnTicket/year_schedule
>>
>>2365306
Awesome thanks!

Hakuhou, allowing 37 year old Takekaze get a morozashi (double inside hold) but winning by yorikiri in the end: "At some point I thought of throwing him, but I felt sorry for him.. Because he's 37.."

Shots fired
>>
>>2364585
Is shoving a sign of respect? I was watching Yokozuna E Hakuhou vs Takekaze
>>
>>2368197
Usually the opposite, Hakuho has a long issue with it. After your opponent steps out you're supposed to stop pushing them.

Hakuho has been reprimanded in the past for more intentional looking shoves after the bout ended, this one was pretty small so it could have been an accident.
>>
>>2367841
I thought Hakuhou might be fucked when he got both hands inside, but Takekaze is just too old despite fighting spirit being good.
>>2368203
No, it's seen sometimes when someone seems pissed off with their opponent after winning.
>>
Day 4: https://youtu.be/iRmtIq4RB2M
>>
hakuho got robbed
>>
>>2368418
Is the ref the one yelling during the match? What is he saying?
>>
>>2368579
No idea why I quoted you >>2368418 sorry about that
>>
>>2368418
>"On rare occasions, the referee or judges may award the win to the wrestler who touched the ground first. This happens if both wrestlers touch the ground at nearly the same time and it is decided that the wrestler who touched the ground second had no chance of winning, his opponent's superior sumo having put him in an irrecoverable position. The losing wrestler is referred to as being shini-tai ("dead body") in this case."

The gyoji correctly awarded the bout to Ikioi. Hakuho only sumo contribution during the bout was his ability to fall more slowly than Ikioi. It was the correct call.
>>
>>2368579

I just found this thread, and I'm watching some of the fights. What are those things sticking out of their underwear?

These fights are pretty fun, I wish this board had less wrestling, and more other stuff.
>>
>>2368782
The ropes hanging from their Mawashi are called Sagari, they're entirely ceremonial.

The sumo threads have been around since before wrestling was added to /asp/, it was a bit more visible back then but it's still a pretty niche topic.

>>2368782
its meant to be evocative of the ropes in front of a shinto shrine since Sumo does have a religious significance in addition to being a sport, the wrestlers themselves are technically shinto priests
>>
>>2368589
initially i had the same thought as >>2368418
but after you explained it like that it makes perfect sense. neither NHK nor any of the people on youtube did a very good job of explaining that.
>>
Does anyone know if sumo gets broadcast on any US cable channels?
>>
>Some sumo organizations have minimum height requirements for their competitors. In 1994, the Japanese Sumo Association required that all sumo wrestlers be a minimum 1.73 m (5'8") in height. This prompted 16-year-old Takeji Harada of Japan (who had failed six previous eligibility tests) to have cosmetic surgery to add an extra 15 cm (6 inches) of silicone to his scalp, which created a large, protruding bulge on his head. In response to this, the Japanese Sumo Association stated that they would no longer accept aspiring wrestlers who surgically enhanced their height, citing health concerns. [14]
They should have let him compete
>>
>>2368726
I have been conducting an informal survey of slaps taking place in recent basho. The result is that more often than not the receiving rikishi ends up winning. I believe they get enraged and thus it is counter productive to even attend to slap the opponent.
>>
>>2369737
It does, TV-Japan. It's a premium channel though and it'll cost you $15-$30 a month depending on your provider. The nice thing about it is that they provide dual audio for the sumo, so you can switch to the English commentary.

>>
I'm paraphrasing here but wikipedia says to reach Yokuzuna status you need to win two tournaments back to back or under "extenuating" circumstances what does that mean?
>>
This has been a very bad basho for my rikishis tbqh

>>2372661
Like when you havent had a japanese zuna in a decade so you promote a mediocre ozeki who happen to finally win a basho after a lifetime of choking. Is very important that the basho has to be won outside a proper yokozuna race so there is no doubt that the ozeki cannot perform under pressure
>>
>>2372661
Kisenosato did not win two in a row. He won his first tournament in January, but had a very strong 2016, getting the most overall bout wins for the year, and second place 4 times. It's important to remember during a lot of his career Hakuhou has been pretty much raping everyone.
>>
So is Harumafuji injured? Because if not then he's been looking horrible this basho
>>
>>2373972
He's definitely been fighting a hurt elbow for quite a few tournaments now, whether that's the source of his trouble this tournament I'm not sure
>>
>>2374466
his performance
>>
>>2372661
there's no set in stone rule for promotion to yokozuna, its entirely at the discretion of the yokozuna promotion board

The convention is to win two tournaments back to back as an oezeki to get promoted, but they'd be within their rights not to promote you up if they didn't want to, just as they promoted Kisenosato without winning 2 in a row.

Personally I thought that was a mistake, because watching him choke tournament after tournament for the last 2 years was a lot of fun, but he does look quite strong so far and if he can keep it up I'll gladly admit I was wrong.

Someone should do a gif of Chiyonokuni dancing on the bales. It was both funny and impressive as his leg goes almost full vertical above him.
>>
Takayasu's tachiai was brutal. He almost sent Sokokurai fliying off the dohyo there and then.
>>
>>2382352
NHK did a preview of the basho a day or so before hand and either John Gunning or Murray Johnson pointed out that Ura has gained a bit of weight since the last basho which might negatively impact his usual style of sumo.
>>
>>2383121
Also his left hand is bandaged so much that I doubt he is able to grab anything with it.
>>
Wow, nice to see some sumo on 4chan.

Kisenosato is looking good so far and he basically has a tag team partner in Takayasu if he keeps doing well. A win for Takayasu is basically a win for Kisenosato. Was very surprised to see Terunofuji lose, but we have a lot of tournament left and Kise's choking doesn't go away that easy.
>>
>>2382352

Ura is too small. We saw the same issues with Satoyama and Takanoyama. As good as they are, the tricks the smaller guys do don't work out as well in Makuuchi as they do Juryo.
>>
>>2384048
Amuru was another slim one that was fun to watch as well. Its a real shame he's slumped so hard though. He's fallen down to Makushita 1 in this basho.

>>
>>2384918
It sounds crazy but ring awareness is actually very difficult, it's not surprising that pulling towards an edge you can't see will fuck you up unless you do it perfectly.

That being said, I think it's one of the skills that really makes a good fighter great. Hakuho for example has incredible ring sense, and he certainly knows when to pull.

Ura needs to stay the same weight at the very least if he's going to keep doing the brand of very agile sumo that has been working for him
>>

haha that's great!!

>>2388976
he's working to gain 10 kg from his current 132, in order to not lose due to not being strong enough, according to the interview he did.

i don't know, was it translated on the english broadcast? would you like me to translate it? https://youtu.be/ziQpC2hN4PU
>>
>>2389049
>would you like me to translate
that would be totally rad anon. they didn't really talk a whole bunch about Ura on the pre basho English broadcast just a quick mention of his weight gain. my thanks in advance if you do decide to translate it
>>
>>2389049
>>2389071
i'm confident in my understanding of the japanese but it's a bit difficult to turn into english which isn't my native language either. i.e. i believe it's factually correct but there could be unclear parts. he's probably a bit vague at times even for a native japanese i think as well.

Ura captivates the audience with his diverse moves.
Despite his height of 173 cm, in only 2 years of professional sumo he has reached makuuchi.

Q. When you entered professional sumo, reaching makuuchi in 2 years...
A. I didn't imagine it. "If I do this I'll become stronger", I have been able to keep that clear aim, and that has yielded results, I believe.

Ura's sumo that excites the dohyou, how is it made?

Q. When your match opponent is decided, you think about various things.
A. Well, the opponent and I... "how can I do this well". At around 11 when I'm in bed, if I watch videos of my opponents I end up not being able to sleep.

Q. Your techniques, are they to some degree calculated and then executed?
A. Sometimes yes, sometimes it's flow. The atmosphere of the opponent, the situation... after entering the ring, I consciously think whether to adjust the decided strategy. So while they are pre-decided, if I lean too much on them, the effect will be worse.

Q. So the effect is the most important.
A. Yes, it's important.
>>
>>2389368
Ura's best is shown at the edge of the dohyou. Strong lower body and high flexibility. Even in difficult positions, he doesn't give up.

Q. The part where you withdraw your belly, you could see the opponent's hands.
A. It's not a position where you have that kind of leeway, watching the opponent's hands. It was desperation. I don't want to step outside. I don't want to lose, I guess. And like it is said, a pinch is a chance. Even if I end up at the edge of the dohyou, that is a chance to counter.

In makuuchi, the opponents are larger than before. Just being nimble is not enough. Therefore Ura is now working on the mainstay of sumo, pushing power. Currently 132 kg, he is aiming at increasing another 10 kg and creating a body that doesn't lose due to lack of strength.

A. From now on, I think adjusting the body becomes more important. I want to be able to sumo with heavily built sumos. In order to stay stable at sekitori rank, well, there's no other way than to move in that direction.

In his first makuuchi in his hometown Osaka, Ura is moving towards a new style of sumo.

A. It's an unknown world. But even in it, I aim at focusing and doing my own sumo during the 15 days, until the end.
>>
I can't stand aoiyama. He is literally disgusting. and the only reason he's as high as he is is because he's a big fat blob.
>>
>>2388976

>>2389370
>A. From now on, I think adjusting the body becomes more important.

Well there is nothing wrong with gaining weight, in fact as Ura points out, it is kind of essential if he wants to stay on Makuuchi. He has tow routes to achieve it. The Hakuho and Harumafuji way which clearly is almost 100% muscle or the Gagamaru and Aoiyama way which will be a shame for such a talented up-and-comer given that it greatly limits the type of sumo you can do.
>>
Day 9: https://youtu.be/t7p0Lzb_Fjc
>>
>>2389712
He's pretty consistent in the upper maegashira, you've got to give him a little more credit. He's not even the heaviest fighter in the top division despite his appearance, both ichinojo and sadanofuji are heavier.

That being said, his style isn't all that exciting to watch as a spectator. We all like to see the crazy throws etc and he just can't do them at his weight.
>>
>>2389819
Hadumafuji is probably a touch underweight, but possibly perfect for Ura's style at around 140kg.

Hakuho maintains the "ideal" weight of around 160kg

Hated the Takanoiwa henka on Takayasu. I'm not a big Takayasu guy or anything but I hate to see henka's on contenders, especially from non-contenders. Watching Takanoiwa pay for that was glorious though.

We should be coming down to a fun last few days. It's basically a tag team match at this point with Takayasu and Kisenosato vs Terunofuji and Harumafuji. Whoever's partner does better might be able to win the tournament for their partner. Takayasu really needs to win one of his bouts against Kakuryu or Harumafuji. If he somehow were to win both, a basho title is very possible.
>>
What was Baruto like in sumo?

I only know him from watching Rizin.
>>
>>2397237
I'll disagree, if Takayasu couldn't spot a henka and win, he doesn't deserve to be in the lead. Henkas only work against lazy sumo.

Day 12 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzpV0qVK6dM
>>
Standings after Day 12:
12 wins
○○○○○○○○○○○○ Y2w Kisenosato

11 wins
○○○○○●○○○○○○ O1w Terunofuji

10 wins
○○○○○○○○○○●● S1w Takayasu
○○○○○○●○○○○● M10w Tochiozan

9 wins
●○●○○○○○●○○○ Y2e Harumafuji

Thoughts on today:

- Terunofuji had an amazing come from behind victory today. I'm still not sure how he pulled it off or how Endo blew it, when all he needed to do was push into his stomach, but Endo blew it. Highlight win for Terunofuji and man is it good to see the big man back at full strength.

- Kisenosato also looked solid today going to 12-0 and he has no Hakuho to worry about this time around.

- Takayasu took his second loss today and has a very very small chance of getting the title at this point. Nothing to be ashamed about though. He overperformed and Harumafuji's technique was very good today.

- Kotoshogiku lost and needs to win his next 3 to get back to Ozeki. If he can't do this, he will never be an Ozeki again, there I said it. I wasn't around when he became an Ozeki but I can't see him winning 33 bouts over 3 tournaments to become an Ozeki again. He can be really good at times, but his lack of balance and lack of being able to fight off henka's will always haunt him. He seems like a good dude, but he just looks downright embarassing at times.

Day 13 - It's heating up:
Kisenosato vs Harumafuji - Harumafuji has the 37-24 edge over Kise.
Kakuryu vs Terunofuji - Kakuryu has a 7-3 record against Terunofuji, but I wouldn't count that so much, since Terunofuji has been a pile of bandages for the last year.
Nice looking Ura vs Chiyoshouma match as well
>>
>>2405587
Excited for both those Yokozuna matches tomorrow damn
>>
>>2405587
>If he can't do this, he will never be an Ozeki again
If he can't do it then it could very well be the end of his career as a rikishi. He is 33 years old and has been Ozeki for 5 years. People and more importantly the JSA will expect him to end his career honorably.

especially considering how obviously muscular he is
>>
Reporting from /int/

Was flipping channels tonight and came across some kind of sumo wrestling championship on the Hong Kong channel.

I watched it for a little while and it was pretty interesting, but I don't understand why they are so fat. I wrestled folkstyle and Greco-Roman in highschool and everything the did was essentially a bastardized version of greco wrestling they have extremely impressive speed and throw around tremendous amounts of force, but they were all so fat that I don't understand it. Why do they get so fat when they could have even more explosive power at the same weight by just packing on even more muscle? Is it a tradition thing?

Please explain this sport to me, I don't understand why they trade power for fat.

Also don't understand why their weights range so much when it's essentially just a battle of momentum.

Any sumo fans able to explain this shit?
>>
>>2408284
They aren't actually fat, the bodyfat percentage of most rikishi is lower than the average person. They look pretty similar in physique to modern power lifters, that's how muscle tends to look when you're going for actual power and not bodybuilding looks.

That being said, when your goal is not being pushed out, more weight makes you harder to push out and also gives you more momentum when pushing forward.
>>
>>2408297
>the bodyfat percentage of most rikishi is lower than the average person

As an American I can assure you that is not impressive or even difficult.

That said I think your mistaken. These dudes are very clearly very high bodyfat. I was a state placer at folkstyle 285, I know how fat guys look when they are genuinely fat compared to a slab of meat with a layer of fat over it. Everyone I watched tonight was significantly fat. even though you could see all the muscle they had underneath it's just not comparable to all the other "fat" athletes around. Even the strongman competitors are significantly more trim (pic related).

It still seems odd to me that they wouldn't trade some of that fat for muscle since they already have lightning fast explosiveness. Putting even power kinetic energy behind that first strike seems as though it would be a huge advantage.
>>
>>2408284
>Why do they get so fat when they could have even more explosive power at the same weight by just packing on even more muscle?
That isn't entirely accurate. What the sport/tradition utilises is a balance of 'mass and muscle', if you were to put it in a way, to produce explosive force and the ability to overcome heavy opposing explosive force. Traditional certainly dictates a lot of the ritualistic aspects but there have been a lot smaller, more 'muscular' wrestlers to achieve high success other larger opponents, so it isn't like they are prohibited from so as you say. It isn't really common, though.

>I don't understand why they trade power for fat.
Force exertion. A larger mass exerts more force, which is why size gives the wrestlers advantage. They are however rather strong as their training is very physical. Compare a line backer in hang egg with the quarterback position, for example. Compare them physically. Line backers are fat fucks with a hell of a lot of muscle as well.

>Also don't understand why their weights range so much when it's essentially just a battle of momentum.
Weight range comes down to what their body is capable of and "personal" choice. Their diet and training is very strategic; some wrestlers are able to put on more mass during training than others due to how their bodies handle it.

>>2408297
>the bodyfat percentage of most rikishi is lower than the average person
It's far higher than the average Japanese. They are "fat", anon. Let's not be coy. They also have a far higher than average lean body mass but they also have a far higher than average amount of adipose tissue and on average die far younger than the rest of the populace due to what they put their bodies through and the complications involved.
>>
>>2408344
>>2408355
Chiyonofuji was famously as low as 6%, Harumafuji is a Yokozuna and at 24%, which is higher than the average male Athlete, but it's not obese. Hakuho was measured on TV at 25%, and he has the "ideal" sumo body.

It's definitely taxing on their bodies though, it's not healthy. It's not within a range we would consider fat though.

>>2408284
It's a bit of a mixture of preferred technique and tradition.

They have a mix of explosive power and mass that allows both blocking of your opponents momentum and gives advantageous positions. Moves like the frontal forceout use the belly to keep the opponent off balance and push them out.

>>

pretty much guaranteed now

Terunofuji has to win either of his next 2 bouts to clinch it.

Takayasu, Harumafuji, and Tochiozan are all 10-3 so if any of them won their next 2 bouts and Terunofuji lost his next 2 bouts there would be a playoff. The real shame of this though is that they had scheduled Terunofuji vs Kisenosato as the last match of day 15, and that would have been a great way to end it, especially if the cup was on the line.

>>
>>2413734
No it's not. This was discussed when Goeido won his cup. Winning 2 for an Ozeki still isn't enough to guarantee a yokozuna promotion.

It's deliberated and decided by committee. Which for a japanese rikshi is a guarantee. Not for a Mongolian.

hakuho was promoted after winning only 2 consecutive tournaments as ozeki, March and May 2007. Although he did go 15-0 in May so I think it would be pretty hard for anyone to argue he didn't deserve the promotion.

In 2006 he went 13-2 in January, March, and July. 14-1 (yusho) in May, 8-7 in September, sat out November due to injury, then went 10-5 in January 07.

Now lets compare 2006/2007 Hakuho to 2016/2017 Terunofuji

>jan: 3-3-9
>march: 8-7
>may: 2-13
>july: 8-7
>september: 4-11
>november: 8-7
>jan: 4-11
Really unimpressive numbers there compared to Hakuho, his last tournament with double digit wins before this one was September 2015.

Now that I'm looking at the numbers I could definitely understand the yokozuna committee being uneasy promoting him. That said the current era is something of an anomaly with multiple yokozuna remaining active for many years. If you look at the number of rikishi with more than 4 yusho its not a very long list, only 30 people have won 5 or more cups since 1911.

>He will never be promoted to Yokozuna.

Here's the various situations:

Yusho + Yusho = Forced to promote him. No way out of it.

Yusho + Jun Yusho = Kakuryu and Kise got promoted off of this. They could use his 4-11 in January against him, but I'm not sure if they would. At worst they could say....

Yusho + Jun Yusho + Maybe 10+ wins? = Again, I don't think he'd have a problem meeting this if he were healthy. Unhealthy Terunofuji? Maybe not.
>>
>>2413509

>when was the last time they didn't promote someone after winning 2 consecutive cup

May have only happened when the Shogun could only declare a Yokozuna, and those rules don't count anymore.

The rule has always been 2 Titles in a row or something equal to it, which is open ended. We have seen multiple people not get promoted off of a Yusho + Jun Yusho like Kaio.

All the anger at Terunofuji for using a strategically good move within the ruleset is ridiculous, he did nothing that every Yokozuna hasn't done.
>>
>>2413751
Yes, it is. They are winning right now because of the henka, but at the time of he winning that 2 yusho none of it matters. He would have to do 5 henkas or anything outside the sumo to be denied the promotion
>>
Also, Im loving the uproar about the Terunohenka. Normally calmed sumoforum is so mad right now

KISENOSATO

Wonder if they're as mad about the kisenohenka
>>
Talk about instant karma.
Yesterday Terunofuji humiliated Kotoshogiku.
Today an injured Kisenosato humiliates twice a bewildered Terunofuji.
>>
>>2415313
Is it though? Terunofuji saw right through the henka that Kisenosato tried

Nobody gonna hate on Kisenosato for doing a henka though because he's Japanese
>>
>>2415239
>Wonder if they're as mad about the kisenohenka
Not as much because everyone assumed Terunofuji deserved it plus Kiso didn't actually succeed at it.
>>
>>2415444
>plus Kiso didn't actually succeed at it.

Doesn't this just prove that Kotoshogiku wasn't paying attention?
>>
>>2415581
Terunofuji caused a false start. Then he did a henka.

Today he lost TWICE.

Terunofuji is done. Will never be a Yokozuna.

I think part of people not hating on Kise for the henka has to do with the spirit in which he did it as oppose to how Terunofuji did it. Terunofuji did it against an obviously struggling opponent who he couldve easily taken in regular sumo whereas Kise did it as an injured fighter against a seemingly much stronger opponent.
Still neither of them do it very often at all and Kotoshogiku wasnt going to be Terunofuji regardless of a henka so I think it's stupid to shit on Terunofuji or Kise for the henkas.
