What d'you guys think of Gary Rogers? Or Skateline in general?

I haven't seen him shred to much but he seems chill as hell, and he presents accurate skate news with good comedy, imo.
>>
Gay
>>
>>2259351
I laughed a lot at the intro to one of his latest episodes where he presented a video of little kids missing tricks and their circle of friends battering them. which he preceeded with the line "Those kids are going to be really good in ten minutes".
He has his moments but he exaggerates. You can tell he likes Chappelle but he comes off as Chris Tucker.

Hey there, soon to be new skater here. I'm looking to go into my local shop this week and pick up my first complete deck and go from there. I've always been interested in skateboarding but I've had a bad knee injury in the past I never fully recovered from, it still gives me problem today. Is it possible to succeed with a loopy knee and if so what are the steps to take? I'm also looking for any other tips, all help is appreciated, thank you!

It's been snowing where I live, so no skating for the past 2 or so weeks.
Was hanging out with this dude who pussied out on ollieing a 5 stair for 1,5 hours straight.
He just bailed each time. Hate pussies like that. Well he's cool, but still.

Also I've got impossible on lock. It's a pretty easy trick once you get it. Wanna go try it down a stairset but it's fucking snowing.

Anyone do anything cool lately?

>>2260705
It really depends on what kind of stanky leg you have. You can always get one of those athletic tape knee supports I guess.
You'll be fine though, my friend has fucking scoliosis and he's pretty much better than me.

>>2260753
Just do the opposite of what you do when doing a back board. Duh.

My knee is pretty stanky. Blew out my knee cap 4 years ago and tore my mcl and shit ton of cartridge. Half assed physio and went back into rugby, found out my knee I just super unstable and dislocates a lot and fluid builds up and yada yada.
Overall It's good on most days and bad on few but those bad days are killer. Mainly stability issues but if you think taping it will work then hey I'll give it a shot.

Thanks for the help, it's much appreciated. If you got any other tips send em here.

we tend to idolise surfing ans surfers, but surfing isn't as inclusive as skating and really, not even that popular. It's the last bastion of anglo colonialism (Hawaii) and it's probably the only industry in the world that makes it almost clear that it wants you to consume its products without pursuing the activity itself.

The skateboarding industry has always been trying to mimic it a lot (videos, pro-models, etc.), but fortunately it hasn't been able to pull this through completely as of now. With the latest comments from Lance Mountain on immaturity and this article http://theridechannel.com/features/2017/02/9-ethical-questions-all-skaters-should-ask-themselves/
they are trying to move just an idea towards that direction, but the list poses some good questions generally.

Ayo, after looking at the shoe spreadsheet and seeing the choices and info.I just wanna get some opinions and insight on what's the best pair for a fresh newbie starting up soon, or if I even need to get new shoes now.
Size 10.5 US also
>>
>>2277338
doesn't matter it will be shred to pieces in two months. Get what's comfy for you. If you ask me, mid-tops are the best choice for durability.
>>
>>2277338
Get vulc soles instead of cupsoles. Get suede instead of canvas. Avoid Nike and other non-skateboarder owned brands if you care about that sort of thing. Buy some super glue and patch up the high wear areas of your shoes if you want durability.

How do I deal with this shit?
>Town doesn't have a huge skate scene

>Throws tantrums when he doesn't land a trick
>Will constantly bitch when people take long runs but will always take champion runs himself and rebate runs when nobody else is
>Freaks out and talks shit if somebody does any tricks that are like his (of course never too their face though)
It's fucking annoying but there really isn't much other people to skate with and other than being a giant man child he's a good person. I've tried calling him out on it but all he did was link me to some ride channel articles about it.
>>
>>2276167
If you have a decent enough income to test things out then try thunders. They're really different than Indy's. It's nice having a pair of trucks that actually turn.

Tbh I wouldn't focus that much on the brand it sure is nice to buy some skater-owned brand but I would look more to get a pair of shoes which are reduced since they rip nonetheless within ~2 months of good amount of skating.

Skate 3 was fun and all, but its popularization of stupid phrases like "judo plant" and its continuation of the "fs indy" crap, annoys me.

Also unrelated to skate 3, hearing people talk about "bs liens" is also disappointing. A lien is a tweaked version of a bs grab, its a backside grab done frontside.

One other one which bugs me while I'm ranting trivial bullshit, is kids calling nosegrinds on tranny overcrooks. Its only an overcrook on a ledge, on tranny its just a nosegrind.

how does one even grab backside??? I can't do it. To me, you either grab between your feet (not through, like a roastbeef, but wrapped around the front foot) or you grab nose. Otherwise you hit your heels. I can't grab at all.
>>
>>2286986
It's an overcrook on tranny too, if the back trucks are sticking over the coping onto the deck. Has to be pretty exaggerated. Kinda like a nose salad, if that makes sense

>>2287993
There's no one right way to do it, you gotta just go with what's comfortable with you
The standard style for a melon, let's say, is to bone out the front foot so your front hand only has to reach a little bit to grab -- no effort (Hence the name, melancholy grab)
I've seen plenty of people grab backside on the side of the nose, and that can look stylee too, if done right.
I can't say much. Hell, I still grab stinkbug when I got for Indy flyouts.

I get your logic here, but traditionally that was still just called a nosegrind. I believe you're applying a modern name, to something which predates the term and doesn't need to be renamed.

I just started to skateboard and I go to a secluded spot with flat pavement so I don't embarrass myself. I got a board from my old roomate who moved away though and there's no skate park or skate shop where I live.

Would it be a problem to learn by myself? I don't want to get into doing bad habits that become muscle memory.

any reasoning behind this or do you just think it sounds cool?
>>
>>2291246
think about it.

When you get your first paycheque, don't you feel happy? Same as when first making a varial flip.

But then, it becomes a routine; the paycheque stays the same, you are living on a steady wage doing the same thing. You can stay at the job where you feel safe or take a risk to find a better paying job. After a while, you get the varial flip down, on lock. You can take a risk and try and learn a new, harder and more impressive flip trick, that at best you will be able to land on good days.

But at the same time, you can do good things with your paycheque, pay a bill, treat a friend, buy something that you want. You can make a varial flip look good if you are positive and not miserable and if it's the only trick you 've got. It's just better than not having any income at all, and that's all it is, but in certain cases it can be all you need.
Some people settle with it and are at peace, others want to pursue a career and only receive that paycheque temporarily (at least in their heads).

I haven't been there yet, surprisingly. I went to Far Rockaway for the first time today and it was meh. The transition is smooth but super small, so I guess it's good for learning.

My local park was Pier 62 at Chelsea up until a few months ago, when I moved back into Long Island. I used to occasionally hit up 181 in Washington Heights, Cooper park, Owls Head, and Fat Kids in Brooklyn.

Now I'm getting friendly with the dudes at Bethpage, Oil City, Long Beach, etc.
I miss Chelsea so much though. I'm planning on driving there in a few weeks, catch up with the homies

I didn't know skateboarding was a real workout I was sweating even though it was 45f and now it hurts to move

Don't forget to rotate your whole body and keep your feet suspended, don't rush to land it.

1.I thought this was saber rider
2. I don't know what DOMS is but it sounds gym jargon
3. you are focusing on the athletic quality of skateboarding

please return to SLAP
>>
>>2308872
DOMS is delayed onset muscle soreness, it just means you're not really sore when you do something but the next day you hurt like shit because you worked out a muscle group that doesn't get much activity. It's a common terms even outside of the gym if you're from an English speaking country.

I was more sucked in by the music. I spent my teenage years locked in my basement listening to house and they put that in videos with a cool european aesthetic. I wish I skated back then so bad because I'm 22 and just built my first board this month.
that's really cool. my favourite palace skater is probably shawn powers or danny brady.

Suck it up, everyone starts somewhere. I fell many times today and didn't even get a giggle but there is those bitches who judge you ( which is rare) but they're just haters. Seriously have fun if you can't do that then you'll never enjoy skating. Find people around your skill level .
>>
>>2309286
Yeah I live in the middle of the boondocks so the closest thing to a skatepark is an empty parking lot. There's barely any sidewalks either
>>
>>2309465
Bad times man. My skatepark is pretty crap and all the pavement is rough but at least we have something. Is the parking lot abandoned? you could get a few bags of cement and make your own park.
>>
>>2309533
It's not abandoned technically but I've never seen anyone use it since its mostly an overflow lot for a business that doesnt get much customers. The pavement is smooth and it has some parts with a slope and others that are flat but I'll probably have to find a new spot soon since its next toa pool and I don't want to hear a million kids

Does anyone have an experience with their trucks always being too loose? I can't seem to keep my trucks tight enough. I've got this problem where I have a hard time keeping the board under me when I'm doing flip tricks if I don't have a stable platform to pop off of, meaning if my trucks are lose I end up landing on either the left or right side of the board and I end up way off balance when I try to correct it. But with tight trucks I have no issues, except I can't keep them tight. My setup right now consists of two separate bottom cylindrical bushings stacked on top of each other, which has helped a lot, but after two weeks I'm finding the 94a bushing are breaking in to much. Should I just buy a pallet of fucking bushings and replace them every couple weeks?

Just bought this cute ass cupcake wax from my local skate shop. Will I get cute girls at my park because of it or should I just return it?
>>
>>2310296
I am a little in th4e same boat as you. I bought extra bushings, indy medium-hard, at some point. But I never thought that my problem at landing flips was in the tightness of my trucks.
>>
>>2309908
none, go buy one. if everyone had to earn their board, you wouldn't see so many Janoski fuckboys mall-grabbing their WKND decks.
>>
>>2309638
try to avoid it as much as possible. a lot of people will bite on it and there are plenty of songs to put in your edit that haven't been used
>>
Why is the mall grab seen as bad? Thats like the easiest way to hold your board when you're skating and have to grab your board toget to another part because when you pop your board and catch it thats where you grab.

Is it just autism? I never knew it was bad until I saw some YouTube video
>>
>>2310983
I think it's just one of those things that skaters use to gauge who's experienced and who's not. I don't know too many skaters that hold their board by the trucks past like their first year of skating.
as for the ease of carrying it by the truck, that's just personal preference. I find it easier to hold/carry my board by the nose or along the side.
>>
Most skateparks have problems with little kids on scooters. The problem at our skatepark is that we have this big ass family of muslim kids that doesn't speak english and they ride 10 speed bikes, cut you off, ride head on towards you, ditch their bikes at the bottom of the ramps, and lay down and sit on the ramps.

>riding a bank at the skatepark yesterday
>the infamous 15 muslims kids show up speaking fucking gibberish
>stick around and ride the bank a bit more since my buddies from out of town are in town riding with me
>ride up the bank
>muslim kid on a girls barbie bmx bike stops right where i'm about to roll back
>skateboard hits his tire and I bump him a little
>tell him to watch out, not knowing if he even fucking understood me
>5 minutes later see him talking to his older brother who's looks about 16 or so
>keeps giving me dirty looks
>eventually comes up and tries blocking the bank staring at me crossing his arms
>still ride it because it's a pretty big ramp
>ask the dude what his fucking problem is but he most likely didn't understand me and he didn't say anything

No fucking consideration for anyone else who wants to ride. I'll take a picture next time I see them there.
>>
>>2310983
>because when you pop your board and catch it thats where you grab

Do people actually do this or is it just this guy. I don't know anyone that pops their board up and catches the trucks, seems like a whole lot of extra effort.

>>
Should I travel 50 minutes to skate at a skatepark alone in a city I don't know even though I've been skating for two weeks when saturday hits? y/n I dont want to be bullied so I plan ongoing at 8am
>>
>>2311246
Nobody is going to make fun of you for trying to learn how to skate, you'll probably meet some cool guys to hang out with I would suggest actually knowing how to ride the board first and knowing how to maneuver around stuff before taking on the skatepark or else you might be an annoyance to some people actually trying to ride. But if you're just riding a little flat ground you should be good.
>>
>>2309908
ollie to kickflip is a big step up. Probably the biggest skill jump in flat ground tricks. You'll need your own board to learn it cos you're going to have to spend several hours per day, every day, non-stop trying to kickflip.
>>
>>2311296
Yeah i know how to ride flat ground ok and how to maneuver, I only fuck up sometimes if I think about how I look when I push then correct it for no reason and it causes me to lose balance. I dont know why I do that to myself sometimes but its rare

>>2311309
Same guy, I have a board that was given to me but its showing it's age with the grip tape starting to look bad and the nose and tail starting to sharpen. Plus this is minor but the graphic is ugly af. It feels like having a wife's son, like it's sort of mine since I have possession of it but I truly can't call it my own because I didn't assemble it myself
>>
>>2311409
Also I've been watchimg videos and they said that people do a shit test and ask who your favorite skater is, the only skateboarders I know outside of Tony Hawk are Stevie Williams, TK, and Dennis Busenitz.

Would I fail? I don't really waych much skate videos outside of "how to" ones right now
>>
>>2311461
Where the fuck did you hear that? No one cares about who your favourite skaters are. Just say "I don't really waych much skate videos outside of "how to" ones right now"
>>
>>2311464
I'm pretty paranoid so I was googling "how to not look like a poser" because I don't want some 15 year olds making fun of me
>>
>>2311474

what level of irony are you on?

not knowing any pro skaters except Tony makes you the realest nigga on the block.
>>
>>2311474
Because a poser couldn't look up "how not to look like a poser" tips on the Internet?
>>
>>2311474
>>2311513
What this guy said, not knowing any pro skaters actually kind of helps you build character in your riding. Nobody will call you a poser if you're learning how to ride, you'll only get called a poser if you boast about being when you're actually trash. Shut the fuck up and get out and ride already.
>>
>>2311474
>>2311528
Also why the fuck do you care about what some 15 year olds think
>>
>>2310983
well, if you do grinds, the trucks collect a lot of dirt...
>>
>>2310296
>don't have a stable platform to pop off of

So when you're crouching down to do a kickflip you find your trucks steering hard to your heelside?

Because if that's the case your center of gravity is off and/or you aren't standing on the balls of your feet. It's an issue ever skater encounters especially on kickflips.

If you need your trucks so tigh they can't turn in order to attempt kickflips you should check your technique and loosen ya damn trucks.

>tfw one of these babies are going to be showing up at your front door

Mmmmm. Only thing I don't know is which wheel size I should be using. I'm thinking towards 59mm. Anyone else ride old style boards around here?
>>
>>2311849
I've been looking into getting a set of ricta clouds 92a. Supposed to be a smoother ride but still hard enough to power slide. Landyachts street hawgs are supposed to be pretty fresh although they kill a lot speed even in the 90a duro.

I don't any old school stuff but I am looking to setup a pub deck.
>>
>>2311849
If your willing to bump that size up to 60mm you could shop around all the longboard free ride wheels they have available these days.
>>
>>2311863
>>2311870
Okay, I'll check Rictas and 60mms out. I'm predominantly going to skate pools and some street stuff, so I guess softer wheels would benefit me more?
>>
>>2310296
You're just not very good at flip tricks. It's nothing to do with your trucks. In fact, looser trucks will help to correct any balance issues you have. You'll steer into which ever side you've over leant.
>>
>>2311888
For pools and street, yes. keep in mind the smoother you roll on everyday pavement the slower you roll on perfectly smooth skateparks and wood ramps. Keep it the 90a range and you should be golden.
>>
I get paid tomorrow so I'm thinking about biting the bullet and buying my own board since putting an objective to buying one is pretty silly now that I think about it, I'm pretty solid on the setup other than the trucks. Which should I get?

Right now my hand me down one has Tensor Mag Lows and I guess they're fine but I don't know how to compare them to other trucks since it's the only skateboard I've ridden. I was thinking about getting Indy Lows
>>
>>2311849
I was thinking of setting up a cruiser with a bones brigade deck, but I have no idea what kind of trucks to put on it. 215 Indies seem way too streched out to handle ollieing curbs, but anything shorter would get crazy wheel bite with cruiser wheels.
>>
>>2312123
How wide is the deck? Because if it's 9.something you should be on 169 or 9 inch.
>>
>>2310983
you shouldn't carry your board with the grip facing your clothes. It causes wear. Only posers don't know this.
>>
Do shock pads do anything? Thinking about putting them on my transport board but there wouldn't be a point if they pack down in a week.
>>
>>2311972
Try out The indy lows I'm sure you'll like them
>>
>>2312224
They prevent landing impacts from creating pressure cracks around the bolt holes. They might dampen a tiny bit of felt road rumble. They're like a buck fifty just give them a try.
>>
>>2312185
10" deck. There's 10" indies, I'm just worried about them bending from landing ollies and such.
>>
>>2312416
Didn't know you were worried about bending. I would imagine 215 would hold up just fine skating curbs.

thanks!
I'll keep trying.
>>
>>2314429
Start with an 8 and go up or down depending on whats comfortable.
>>
My work gives me $165 to spend on anything fitness related so I'm thinking of getting a new complete to try different brands. Anyone ever ride those trucks advertised as the lightest ever made?
>>
>>2310983
If you ever grind, your trucks will get rough and cut up, making it uncomfortable to hold.

>>
>>2314429
height weight and shoe size doesn't matter unless you're like 6 on a 8.5 board with 60 mils or something. Just ask the shop if you can stand on a couple of the decks to see what you like.
