According to Ryback, he proposed an angle to McMahon. As the story goes, Ryback would appear to leave the company to Train for MMA, but only to return to WWE with newly acquired MMA skills.

It's pretty much the breeding ground here in Las Vegas of MMA.' I said, 'let me go join a fight camp, full-time, for six months. We will make it look like I'm about to go out and do a real fight. I come back to WWE though, challenge Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania.'"
Ryback continued,

It's not a bad idea, but nobody would belive it. Especially in a post CM Punk mma debut world where everyone saw what 2 fucking years worth of training at a high level camp gets you against a very green fighter. Just because Ryback would learn how to throw a jab hook combo doesn't mean I would belive he would have any chance against Lesnar.

He is right in this regard though. To recoup loss, maybe the company should book the loser to still put on a great match so the crowd leaves happy instead of booking them to a shitty two minute job matches.
