If the whole product is absolute dogshit, not even the most talented and popular guy is going to be able to do much about it. Not Lesnar, not Cena, not Nakamura.

NXT live events do fairly well. Network viewership may be down but they're still selling plenty of tickets. People want to see Nakamura, Joe, Asuka etc if they're in the area. They brought him up as the defending babyface champion with zero characterization against a Heel who had been given some shading, and expected people to care. Who should they? He's already on the mountain-top. They should care because they watched his story unfold through the CWC, but a great deal of them probably didn't.
