What's with the myth that becoming a big star in wrestling requires having great "mic skills?" Bret Hart and Chris Benoit had negative charisma on the microphone and still got over as babyface champions. Goldberg hardly spoke a word and became WCW's top star over Hogan and Sting. Jeff Hardy is an abysmal talker yet little jimmies buy his merchandise in droves. Why are wrestling fans incapable of grasping the concept of nonverbal charisma?
>>
People always forget that most people in the AE and RA era had shit tier mic skills, but still get over due to nostalgia.
>>
>>1613170
Becoming a big star requires charisma, not necessarily mic skills. Arn Anderson is good on the mic but not super charismatic. Goldberg is very charismatic but a poor talker.
>>
>>1613170

They are idolized by dudes famed for their charisma like Jericho. (Go read his book) because they could actually wrestle in a new and exciting way unlike the big mouths who couldn't in the machismo super arnie era.
>>
>>1613180

Benoit was shit on the mic, and Lesnar never speaks, yet they exhumed an aura of confidence and with it charisma. They didn't need to have promos and have hot banter on the microphone, people just knew what was coming.and loved it.
>>
>>1613189
Lesnar isn't even that bad, but he's great at being the tough guy who gives zero shits as long as he's payed and gets to beat the crap out of someone
>>
Benoit was decent on mic and was even way much better on WCW

Goddamn you guys ser--18+
>>
>>1613213
Jesus fucking Christ no he wasn't. I've been watching his feud with Raven's Flock and his promos are laughably bad.
>>
>>1613175
Austin and the Rock are the best two wrestlers on the mic ever, 18+
>>
>>1613371
That was when Benoit was fed up in WCW a long with the other cruiserweights(in which they left ala the radicals)

Look up his promos back when he was teaming up with the 4 horsement. He was pretty decent in those.
>>
>>1613417
I was just about to mention the work with the Horsemen, because I do remember him holding up his end on the mic at that time. But on reflection, I suspect that those segments were designed to keep him protected - like if he ran out of things to say, Ric, Arn, Woman or whoever could pick up the slack.
>>
I 100% believe that smarks have no idea what charisma is. It's why Finn Balor is gonna win the universal championship and nakamura the nxt belt
>>
>>1613170
18+ kiddo
>>
>>1613420
Well he was still proving himself overall as a wrestler and not just a talker at that time so that's understandable
>>
>>1613417
Gain some age.

The flock happened way before the radicals. Benoit still had another Horsemen run in him between the two.
>>
>>1613431
radicals as in WWE debut radicals. Chris, Eddie, Saturn, and Malenko all were good friends and finally couldn't take anymore of the problems in WCW and left together.

Gain some reading comprehension skills
>>
>>1613375

>names two people
>out of a roster of 30+ who weren't that fucking good at all
>>
>>1613175
How could they have gotten over during their runs due to nostalgia? When I was watching and enjoying the fuck out of Benoit as a wrestler in WCW, he was over with me because of nostalgia?
Are you a teenager?

>>
>>1613170
Benoit is kinda underrated on the mic. Sure he was bad compared to most of the top guys back then but he's still better than 70% of today's roster.
>>
>>1613180
Arn didn't need charisma. You just believed what he said.
>>
>>1613170
You don't NEED to talk well. You just need to compel the audience to watch you.
Parallel: Daniel Bryan and Finn Balor.
Neither good speakers, but Bryan put in work every week. He connected through angles in which he, as a character, pulled his weight and built a rapport.
Finn can't carry an angle. Nor is he particularly enthralling in-ring, especially compared to some of the talents on the Raw roster being pushed beneath him. His "charisma" is having a make-up lady paint on him once every 30 days.

Bret Hart actually made a scale on how you can be over with the fans with a simple point system.

Rank out of 10 the following

Your look
Your work
Your mic skills

If you get 20 out of 30 or more you can be championship main event level

Bret gave himself
Look: 7, mostly because of the pink but he felt he was average otherwise
Work: 10, Can't argue that
Promo: 6, he was honest and said if he had something he could get behind, then he would be a 7, but a solid 6

So Bret got a 23 and thus passes for a main event spot

He then brought up Hogan

Look: 10
Work: 4
Mic: 10

Bret gave him a higher rank then himself but showed that even with a weak field, if you are strong in others you can still be a main eventer

Now taking what Bret used apply that to other guys that confuse you

You mentioned Goldberg.

Look: 9 (Jacked Austin, which was hot at the time and a great entrance)
Work: 6, really got people going mind ya even if it was short
Promo: 5, not the best mic skills but he was playing the beast character

He got a 20 and thus JUST makes it for main event, but JUST making it shows just why his run was also just as brief.

So apply this to others guys
>>
>>1615363
This was from his book I believe or an interview, I feel like I heard this somewhere before.
>>
Bret Hart was actually a good promo especially in his Canadian Hero gimmick, I don't know where this revision is coming from where he wouldn't talk.
>>
>>1615388
Bret said himself if he had something he could really "talk about and get behind" he saw himself as a solid 7, but even he knew his promos were weak if he was thrown into something loosely.

Like HEY BRET, it's you vs. the Berserker this Sunday. He got nothing.

But I do agree, 1997 Hart Foundation Bret Hart was really on fire.
>>
>>1613170
Benoit destroyed his body for over 20 years until he finally was on top and Bret was actually pretty good on the mic.
>>
>>1613189
>Benoit was shit on the mic, and Lesnar never speaks, yet they exhumed an aura of confidence and with it charisma.
>exhumed

Although the word you were going for was "exuded", that is creepily fitting for Benoit's current situation.
>>
>>1615423
Both go into the LOOK category

Benoit:
Look 8
Work 10
Mic 5
Total: 23, his in the main event

Brock:
Look: 10
Work: 8
Mic: 6
Nigga got a 24, he's in the main event

Brock should realistically get a zero for mic since he barely ever talks these days. Although I would say Brock pre-UFC was deffinitely a 10 for look and work. He was also good on the mic before he left. These days he's never on the mic so he can't even actually be ranked on that scale fairly.

Daniel got extremely lucky his meme took off big time with the crowd, Cesaro will never get that lucky because he is a charisma vaccum, Kevin Owens should be thankful he's even there, Samy Zayn looks too much like your every day dude.

CM Punk was the only one of these guys listed that truly deserved to be where he was at but he could have been even better had he actually worked out.

All it took was being the greatest technical wrestler of all time and sacrificing his body for sick spots for 15 years before an upper midcard title reign sandwiched in between HHH killing RAW

Stop acting like Benoit proves anything. He proves what Bryan and Bret prove.
Wrestling fans love wrestlers who LOVE to wrestle more than anything at all.

Benoit was never as over as you remember. He was Jericho floundering in mid card levels of over at his peak and never as over as Jericho was in the early and late 2000's

Kevin Owens
L- 6
One of the most recognizable non cookie cutter wrestlers right now and harkens back to a time when men could be big
W- 7
My definition of an above average guy. He will either blow the roof off the building with a real talent or salvage a solid match with a bad one
M-8
Snarky heel. Quick on his feet in commentary and adds a lot of subtle things that flesh out promos and banter

Sami Zayn
L- 2
He needs to start from scratch. The tights, ring jacket and hat are awful. He is undefined and his hair and beard make him look like a bicycle Mormon forgot to shave
W-9
Probably the 2nd best wrestler in the company right now. Hasn't had a bad PPV match all year
M-4
He shows flashes but he never has anything substantial to say. You could replace all his words with "yeah I'm going to win because I try hard" and get the same effect

>Wyatt (22)
L - 7
Football Running Back, Looks tanky as fuck, can stand toe-to-toe with Triple H, scary beard
R - 6
Serviceable in the ring and brutal fucking moveset. Uranage slam is nuts
M - 9
Could be a 10 if he is given better material to work with.

>Styles (19)
L - 6/10
Decent look, ripped to some degree, midget
W - 9/10
Age is catching up to him, but still the best enhancement talent WWE can offer. Can work with everybody sans Curt Hawkins
M - 5/10
Improved from last two years, still awkward most of the time, but brings fire

>Kevin Owens (18)
L - 2/10
Kevin from 2005 onwards is an angry sack of fat and lard. Only time where he is believable is when he blades his face. Also small
W- 9/10
Scary power moves, high flying, can work a good match when he wants.
M - 7/10
French accent and upbringing shows through, but quick-witted and has charisma

This shit again.

Look is nowhere near as important at the other two.

Flair did have a great look, but his work isn't a 10. He was a great worker, but had almost no moveset.

Daniel Bryan 22
L - 6 (his look as the underdog at Wrestlemania 30 was perfect for the role)
W - 10
M - 6

CM Punk 23
L - 5 (he looked sort of cool when he had the slicked back hair in a t-shirt, but in ring he always looked like a slob)
W - 8
M - 10

Cesaro 17
L - 5 (boring, though the tape helps)
W - 9
M - 3

Sami Zayn 19
L - 4
W - 10

Kevin Owens 23
L - 6 (His look isn't ideal for most, but it enhances his gimmick)

What about his classics with Mr. Perfect and Stone Cold?
>>

Styles - 21
L - 5
W - 10 (Best in WWE right now and since prime DBry. Great in ring storyteller and technical but has a great moveset that's fun to watch.
M - 6

Balor 18 - 20
L - 7 (9 as demon)
W - 7
M - 4

Jericho 19 - 23
L - 8 (pre dad-bod and trunks) 4 now
W - 7
M - 8 (Used to be a 9 or 10)

Orton 20 (used to be a much better worker)
L - 9
W - 6
M - 5

Cena 23
L - 7 (looks sort of corny and his muscles are awkward)
W - 8 underrated as fuck
M - 8

HHH 23
L - 9 (has looked good since RA)
W - 7
M - 7

Dean 21
L - 6
W - 7 (good Dean matches this year have been really good) See roadblock with Haitch or any of his title defenses leading up to the last PPV even though I know /asp/ hated them)
M - 8

Roman 19
L - 9 (too pretty for 10 and his boots need to match his vests with a matching stripe. It's design 101 and they keep fucking it up)
W - 6
M - 4

Seth 22
L- 7
W - 9
M - 6

Undertaker 22
L - 10
W - 8 (he's not the type who can elevate mediocre or bad workers like Bryan, HBK, or Styles, but with a good worker he really delivers.)

>Hogan's wrestling 4

I know in the WWF/WCW/WWE he got SUUUPER popular throwing right hands, big boots, and leg drops, but if you watch some of his japanese stuff the guy is throwing flying Fujiwara armbars, stiff lariats, crazy shit.
