how is it different from any other skateboarding contest, only a billion viewers, so skateboarders don't like their secret club being exposed.
the skateboarding exclusiveness needs to die, and what a better debut than the olympics.
skateboarding doesn't stand for shit, you either roll around on a plank or you don't. you can act like a douche either way.

Anyone know where/how I would go about learning in Melbourne, Australia?

I'd prefer to actually be taught by somebody who knows what they're doing, but if you think I should learn on my own then w/e I guess.

I'm 23, and am worried about going to a skate park (or in public in general) without being taught how to not fall on my ass immediately.
>>
Does anyone have advice on finding places to skate without being seen?

I'm nearly 27. I started skateboarding a little over a year ago but I can never find a spot to practice. I started after a friend gave me his old board, and try to stick with it because it's fun exercise.

Anyway, because it's embarrassing to be seen skating as a grown person (despite the fact that skiing is "high-class" and essentially the same kind of activity), I try to find places where I can skate privately. But every inch of paved land seems to be either prone to observation or near super high-crime areas. How do I stay private without the risk of getting fucked? Keep in mind it's easier to get off with a warning for trespassing when you're a teenager. For me I think a police encounter is almost a guaranteed arrest, let alone a humiliating experience.

>>1574132

lol that's not true at all I'm 28 and if you just leave when they ask or start leaving when you see them you're fine. At worst they might just be mean or condescending to you but that's only once in awhile. Getting arrested is such a slim chance I mean I've technically broken into the mall to skate when it was closed and didn't get arrested and was just polite when they came up to me.

In regards to finding alone spots, you just need to keep looking. You'll find some stuff. Maybe even just look for flat ground places that are secluded so you have somewhere to roll around and you know you'll be alone. And you could just bring a cone or wax a curb to have an obstacle. But you'll find some eventually. This one spot behind an office complex I know of is almost totally secluded and has a small stairset and handrail, but even then there's usually one or two people in the building so its not totally alone. You sort of need to get over the fear of people seeing you but if you search hard enough you'll find places.

>>1573990

Just find a m8 at the park and skate together and get pointers on falling/progressing that way, skate teachers don't really exist yet

Biggest thing about falling I can tell you is don't try to put your palms down to break your fall, you do not want to get into that habit. Learn to roll and avoid putting your hands down. Watch videos of pros and watch how they slam, mimick that. And you can learn by watching the way they skate too, that's how most of us learned aside from just practice.
>>
>>1573380

Yea those two trucks couldn't be more different. I feel like sticking with the indys will be worth it for you though in the long run. Did you get the hollow indys? Also relearning your stuff on a new setup is always super helpful for cementing what you've learned in the long run so just stick with it.

>>
>>1574352
I'm the 23 year old.

But what if I can't find anyone else around my age? It'd be weird if I was hanging out with a teenager.

I mostly just want to use it for transport, so I just want to be able to go fast and not fall off, and maybe ollie and simple shit like that.

Sucks that teachers aren't a thing though..

I guess I'll go see a nearby park if there is anyone my age..

Am I being overly paranoid or would it be weird if I just showed up at a skate park (after learning to balance and a little bit of practice on a carpeted surface) and just skate around?

I just don't want to stick out too much, I hate attention.
>>
>>1574650
I'm 23. In the crew that has formed at my local park we have 3 or 4 guys around my age and then a handful of teenagers. Some of the coolest guys I skate with are 16 because they're so in to skating and don't have to go to work and be boring like the rest of us.
Get over your fears of being looked at strange. It's embarrassing 2bdesu

>>1574352

Yep, I'm in a similar thing where I just don't like going to skateparks because they're swarming with the absolute worst kind of shitheel adolescents; but I live in such a hilly area that the closest flat parking lot is a 10 minute drive away.

Trying to practice tricks while being unwillingly rolled down a hill is no fun, and I'm close to one of the best parks in the country, I just am not ready to deal with that yet.

In the meantime I'd say just throw your board in the back seat of the car and go around looking for big open shipping areas, loading bays, that kind of thing near you.

Becuase a lot of people still think of sktaeboarding as an anti-establishment sport. They are sick 'cool' brands (rockstar, redbull, nike) jumping on and then off when it becomes unprofitable.

They want skateboarding to stay in the hands of the skateboarders and to support creativity and fun, not contest bro roboticism.

GUYS I NEED HELP

I'm getting the hang of the flicking part of the kickflip and I jump but only land with one foot,

and the board is moving kind of to the side when I jump+flick so how do I fix that?

The board goes in a way that my front foot ends up landing on the back screws so my backfoot ends up on the ground, not on the skateboard.
>>
>>1575303
well?
>>
>>1581076
Lean more forward so your weight is over the middle, not over the tail. After you pop make sure to bring your back foot up high and under you. Focus on keeping the board under you.
>>
>>1581131

I didn't get the first part, but yeah I was seeing a vid from Aaron Kyro and he said to just try to land on the front foot at first, but even when I try to my skate goes more to the side so my front foot ends up near the tail

I dont know if im kicking too hard or if my jump pushes the skate to the side

My jump isnt that great yet so my backfoot doesnt go that high(i cant really bend my knee)

Any way to fix that?
>>
>>1581206
just make it a lot of times
everything else is just to make you feel good

the only real tip I have is this:

make sure your front foot is not at an outwards angle, that your knee isn't pointing to the nose. I think that's the most common mistake on a board, bred of insecurity.
And don't hassle it, just pop and flick and land the bastard. It won't be the end of the world if you fall, even if you brake a limb.
>>
>>1581206
What I mean is, when your jumping your leaning too far back towards the tail so when you jump your body is going to be going backwards, and your board is gonna shoot out in front of you when you kick it. Lean more on your front foot. Set up your phone to video you doing a couple and you'll see what I mean.

I understand what you mean, but man, I've been skating for something near to 4 years, and most of the time I skate alone, I go to spots alone, but usually there are more skaters, so I might be alone, but skating with them...
This weekend, skating totally alone I thought:
what's the point of having your own skatepark if you would not have anyone to skate with?
I mean, your proggresion will be much slower, your fun will be much less, and your creativity will be really limited cause skating is not just the mere fact of skating but everything that comes along with it...
think about it and stop being a faggot ;)

built my first board last week, so I'm a complete beginner.

I wasn't confident even pushing off, but now I'm a little better at that. Right now I'm working on turning, and I read somewhere that loosening the king pins a little would help so I did that.

A problem I'm having is doing sharp turns that involve lifting up the nose because I fell trying to do a manual. Also, I'm afraid of getting hurt. I'm 22 and a little stocky so I feel like my weight is hindering me as well.

I only was able to ollie after I pulled my head out of my ass and just let myself have fun. Skating isn't supposed to be some super-serious tryhard only competitive sport. It's supposed to be fun.

EVERY YEAR I TELL MYSELF THIS IS IT, I'M DONE I'M DONE WITH SKATING, I'VE BEEN TRYING TO OLLIE UP A CURB FOR NEARLY A DECADE AND I STILL CAN'T DO IT

EVERY YEAR I TELL MYSELF I'LL DONATE MY BOARD TO SOME POOR CHILDREN

and every year I end up having fun just skating down a hill and trying to land at least a standing kickflip, and actually managing standing ollies and shuvits

I even re-lubed my bearings and sprayed WD40 all over the truck assembly

Hey guys
Bought my first board, toy machine complete in local skateshop, people say it's pretty decent
But it has 52mm wheels, so it's really hard and annoying to ride on streets (Roads are old and rough af). No real skateparks at all. So what do I do? Buy wider & softer wheels, or carry it in hands to decent spot? Sry for my bad english
>>
Guy who sprained his knee bad here. Doc said it was Okay to skate on it again. Super hyped to skate tonight and practice. Hopefully I'll get the hang of pushing nonmongo and Ollies while moving. Watched some old Rodney Mullen clips and it's getting me pumped
>>
Anons, how would you run away if you had an instinctive choice? For example, if someone chased you, would you just pick up the skateboard and run by foot or skate away as fast as you can? And which one's faster, running or skating? I'm asking because I'm writing a story and need to write a chase scene.
>>

>tfw little Japanese girls are better than you at skating
>>
>>1588611
Depends on where you are, where you're running through, and who you're running from. Most of the time I'd run on foot, but if it's lets say a big empty street on a slope I'd bomb that, would be way faster. For fiction purposes, skating might be better.

That must suck ass as a pro to bail that hard in front of people. I guess you get used to it, but shit, it still must blow.
>>
>>1589339

Not really but you can usually find the shoes you used to like on eBay, like old stock. es makes shoes that at least have padding in the sides/tongue, but nothing as thick as they used to be.

You have to remember that even though there are lots of different brands, they're all coming out of basically the exact same contract factories in vietnam, Indonesia, etc, so if the market is going toward thin vulc stuff, everyone else is kind of locked into that to a certain degree because that's what the those factories are scaled to produce and going in a different direction would be significantly more expensive since it would mean changing the production those factories are set to be doing. And even fashion (non skate) shoes have moved away from the puffy fat look

Can anyone give me some tips on how to Ollie? I feel like I'm getting worse the more I practice. Here's a video I took today
>>
>>1592865
dont slide your foot diagonally up the board- slide it more horizontally, parallel to the ground
>>
>>1592871
Thanks that actually makes a lot of sense, I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Also, any tips on landing back on the board? I used land back on a lot more consistently but not for some reason I keep landing too far forward and I'm not quite sure what I've changed.
>>
>>1592282
agreed. waiting on my cliche(dwindle is the dist. for these companies) impact light to come in the mail. They use a single deck presses which means that every deck will be exactly the same curve and we all know, as skaters, that consistency is key to landing tricks. the carbon fiber inlay will also provide lasting pop and prevent cracking. Only thing is that impact lights are really hard to find in 7.75. If you skate 8s and higher, you should have no problem finding these decks.
>>
I can't find any impacts at all on the flip side, ive been trying to find double impacts in 8.25+

Makes me sad, I'm not exactly thin or anything so it's sorely needed. Where did you find yours?
>>
>>1592982
Flip is part of NHS, they use P2 instead of impact
>>
>>1593002
You know I had typed that on mobile, so I didn't get to quote the post (>>1592935 )

>>

>>
>>1593050 here
>>1592882

Fuck off dude, that argument is bullshit. Keeping the general alive with terrible content for the sake of having a general defeats the purpose. If the general would die off without beginners asking how to commit to tricks, then it may as well die off.

are you taking the piss m8?

I like to think getting arrested is a slim chance but I want like no chance. I have skated around at a loading dock behind a grocery store that closes early. It's pretty secluded and has a bunch of room to roam. I also found a nicely paved office park that looks fairly vacant on weekends, but it's in a nice part of town where they'll probably go after you for the littlest thing. I narrowly dodged some guy in that area working super late in a building I thought was empty. I really don't want to repeat that experience. Lesson learned: even with no cars in the lot, one light on means occupied.

>>1574741
>just throw your board in the back seat of the car and go around looking for big open shipping areas.
Weird you would say that. I did this the other night and found a street which serves as a sort of shipping hub, and the lots at the innermost point seemed pretty dead. Might go back soon. It's not well lit and I worry about the 24-hour nature of shipping, but hey I can hang out and feel it out before I start skating.

>>1585823
I'm not all about progression. It's mostly for exercise value, but progress is a nice bit of motivation. I used to head to this really great park from time to time but it's just sort of lame-- being the adult trying to ollie up the same thing a hundred times or get a basic low bowl carve down while a bunch of kids (and sometimes their parents, who are only slightly older than me) are around. I mean if I at least had a varial flip down or something then sure, but when you're a clear total beginner around a bunch of kids it's just a bad look.

blank decks in eu? I snapped my street in half, and guessing by its age, my kicktail will have the same fate soon. What do you guys advice for a mixture of cruising and tricks? I mount custom longboard trucks, 7.8 inches

old skool
depending on where you live, an old skool with a sort of "handle" maybe your choice.
Carve the handle, put fiber glass, do the zboard thing. You get the bus, you go. And, always depending on your style, duct tape near the handle so you don't splinter your hand like a porcupine like i did the first time i did
Or maybe just another kicktail

is it common for the truck to snap? like it wasnt the kingpin but the hanger i guess. literally bought these trucks like less than 5 months ago

oh well i guess i can try some different ones now. are there any weaknesses to hollow trucks?
>>
>>1599407
not sure, have you checked out suspension trucks?

>>
>>1598772
I put 55mm 78a kryptonics on my popsicle board with 8" trucks and it's smooth as fuck. However, unless you already know what you're doing they're not ideal for real fliptricks. The wheels you'll want are wide, bouncy and heavy. If you're trying to learn how to kickflip on big soft wheels you're going to have a harder time, if you are already capable you just have to flick harder than you're used to. To all the people with fucked up pavement looking for some sort of "hybrid" it's all about accommodating durometer and size to what you can bare. But it rarely turns out exactly how you want it from my experience, better to just have two separate decks.

Why does art on decks always suck so much? Is there a brand where the print isn't terrible?
>>
>>1600750
Blanks
>>
>>1599407

That only happens with no-name shitty trucks but its the most common way those type break. What brand was it?

Hollow trucks are barely hollow. When you get them you'll see there is like, maybe a 3-4mm diameter section removed. So they aren't really weaker. Also there is still an axle inserted its just hollow. But if you're worried about this you could always get the hollow kingpin ones with solid axle.

One weakness is you can't replace the kingpin on many of them when they have the hollow kingpin.
>>
>>1600083

That's cool, apparently there is a big market for carbon fiber boards. There is an old guy at our skatepark who does downhill racing, like he competes in it against others so I guess there is still a scene for that?? His board is 100% carbon fiber. He let me ride it once and it didn't feel different, except much lighter, when you picked it up you were mostly just feeling the weight of the trucks.
