He also made it in TNA and ROH winning countless championships in the two biggest competitors in America to WWE, as well as in RPW, and countless indie promotions and became the biggest draw not in WWE. He sold so much merchandise for TNA, ROH and NJPW, and was a big money draw. Not only that, he has the technical prowess that has earned all the acclaim, and doesn't have Vince's look. AJ Styles is a huge deal, and is proof that not everyone needs WWE. And that makes Vince angry.

Good. Even with AJ losing, this match will be very important for both of them.
WWE have been heavily enamored with their attempts to get AJ Styles over. The Miz, Jericho, they've both done a great job.
Who else could he have gone against after those feuds? What Heel on the roster is both positioned loftily enough and gets genuine crowd hate?
Miz? Been there. Y2J? Been there. Owens? Gets pops, wouldn't work.
He's not a Heel, but Roman gets louder boo's than any of them.
Going against Roman will cement AJ as a fan-favourite, and Roman as a grey-area babyface, or even a Heel.

The fact that he's getting a main event match at a PPV within 3 months of his hiring is extraordinary.

If they are really going to go with a heel Roman Reigns, they could show AJ Styles out-wrestling him for the first part of the match, only for Roman to finally overpower him and beat the holy hell out of him to the point of unconsciousness.

Gets Roman major heat and sets up Styles as an underdog face for a possible rematch down the line.
