So tell me /asp/, why should I be learning any of your "modern" martial arts when I can learn ancient arts (read: tested throughout the centuries) that allow me to literally blow assailants away from a distance?

I can't stand how the media paints physical combat off as "modern" and effective, throws that shit on TV in "competitive" setting (UFC kek) in order to boost gym membership sales worldwide. The answer has been around for much longer than the concept of commercial gyms.

I thought that was a Borat style comedy movie but no, this is actually a documentary. I don't know how to feel.

You shouldn't. Obviously you're good to go.

So when are you going to demonstrate on some criminals?

Well, if you really want to know why the ufc and mma have evolved into the way they look today, go back and watch those first ufc events. Those traditional martial arts turned out to be almost entirely ineffective against grappling. Most karate, tkd, and kung fu schools are just bullshit where you pay for your advancement. If you really want to get into something effective, learn to box, kickbox, or learn bjj. Really, you should be learning to defend yourself standing and on the ground.

Yellow Bamboo is bullshit, op. Don't fall for it. It is a lie and a scam. If you want genuine effective martial art, you need EFO (Empty Force)

Why would you go through that hassle when a gun has the same effect?

Money? And guns could jam whereas this seems pretty infallible. It takes luck and multiple shots to take down this many opponents, but the more experienced Yellow Bamboo practitioner incapacitated all of them in one blow.

Ah well. I belive the best martial arts are nowadays MMA and the "cross of asp" styles..

NEVERTHELESS we should not forget a few things: When you wear no gloves, things are different. MMA gloves already change a lot and bareknuckle boxing is different from "normal" boxing. Just like old school Muay Thai looks not exactly like the stuff you see in the ring nowadays. I found Kyokushin resembles the "bare knuckle" stuff the best - more fists to soft targets (i.e. belly), more palms/hammer fists to hard targets (i.e. face). But even here you don't actually pratice stuff like hammer fist anymore, only in MMA but just for grounded oponents.

Second IMPORTANT point:
Weapons. Kung Fu is always closely related to weapons, and that's why a lot of their unarmed fighting looks so terrible. This whole body rotations and large scale footwork and wide stances are absolutely unnecessary and not useful - unless we are talking about fighting with weapons..

I don't want to go into detail here, but you might want to swing a longstaff with a lot of power, you'll notice how much power you can put into it and that you ned to be grounded a lot to not get thrown off balace by the momentum (especially if you want to prevent overhitting)..

So I think MMA is definately the best stuff out there, because in former days the peopel just hadn't the possibilities we have today. But jsut laughing about old school martial arts without taking into account WHY they do things in a certain way is stupid and wrong.
