I now have a kotlet, so that means we need a cat post. Is there anything one should look for when shopping such as avoiding certain materials or chemicals? Do you have any recommendations for a cat post that can be ordered online?

I find most cats prefer sissel rope. The post you - well, posted - has some on the vertical poles.
Look for trees that have multiple textures and types of scratching surfaces. E.g. OP pic has vertical, horizontal, diagonal; carpet, sissel. Cardboard and natural wood are also possibilities.
Just saying, if you're even halfway handy you can save a LOT by building cat trees out of scrap wood and carpet. Sissel rope is cheap at Home Depot too.
Avoid cardboard scratchers, they make a fucking mess, go for carpet and sissel
imagine being so cucked by a filthy animal you'd be willing to put up such a hideous monstrosity inside your home
How are you meant to clean the carpeted ones? I imagine they begin to smell foul after a while.

I just vacuum it maybe once a week with the hose attachment.
It doesn't need anything more than that unless your cat pisses/shits/throws up on it for some reason. In that case, use that foaming carpet cleaner stuff.
