Do any of those Dog DNA services work? It seems like one of those things that no one has the capability of doing and is just a scam.

Trying to figure out what my pup probably consists of besides terrier.

they'll give results. whether they're accurate or not, god only knows. a vet guessing will probably be more accurate.

what difference does it make what's in your mutt? just pick a couple of cool breeds and tell people that's what your mutt is.

Nope. I tried them with three different samples. For breed specifics (what breed does the dog most closely resemble, weight, height) I put random shit. For my purebred GSD (whom I have an 4 generation akc certificate for) is actually a lab/rottweiler mix. My sheltie is actually a border collie/labrador mix. My shepherd mix is actually a husky/shepherd mix. When I called them to complain they hung up on me the first two times and on the third time they refunded me my money (was actually a gift from my aunt but don't let them know).

My understanding was that it would be nice to know any specific ailments that could be associated with a particular breed.

That's about what I was expecting. Thanks.

mutts are generally less likely to have breed-specific problems.

I don't know how expensive these are, but they don't need a full sequence to figure basic stuff out. If they're not using next gen methods and something like Sanger instead the material costs are cheap, like $50 to $80. Of course you have to add wages and so on on top of that, it takes one to two full work days for one person and they still have to make a profit.

But no, sequencing is no longer as expensive or difficult as it used to be. Full sequence next gen runs are coming down in price too, used to be around $5000 a few years ago but we'll be approaching $2000 soon.
