Because they are the most recent noticeable extinction and considered a "tragic" case since human persecution ended their species. Of course, Australia's biodiversity was already fucked due to the Aboriginals.

They were not megafauna. Also, people only care because they were the largest Australian carnivores. They weren't as "boring" as the majority of marsupial species I listed above (most of which went extinct after the thylacine) which no one gives a shit about.
