Can we have a crab thread?

I fucking love coconut crabs. I wish I lived somewhere more tropical so I could see them in person more often.

If I wanted a pet crab that wasn't a hermit crab, would that be viable? What types of crabs should I consider?

Crabs of the genus Geosesarma are interesting because they are heavily terrestrial and only need shallow dishes to bathe in. In recent years there's been a lot of imports of newly discovered dwarf species that are about an inch and have all kinds of nice colors.

Looked them up just now. Vampire crab is a cool nickname.

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to keeping pets in tanks. I've never done it before, but crabs inspire me to want to give it a go. All the specifications for their tank/environment seem intimidating, but I'd love to keep them.

Just make sure to prepare well and find a seller that can clearly tell you the scientific name of the species. Vampire crabs are a good example for that. A lot of pet stores attach that name to a wide variety of species that have vastly different requirements.

Coconut crabs aren't crabs.
This, however is (johngarthia lagostoma from ascension island)
I really want to have one of these as a pet.

I think i'd like to set up a hermit crab colony. They're so neat and would be an interesting contrast to my reptiles.
>>
rainbow crab
>>
>>2454421
Hmm... on second thought maybe not. The caresheets indicate to me they are nearly as delicate and fussy about their habitat as dart frogs.
>>
>>2454439
They are not that hard to care for. They just need a bowl of saltwater, a bowl of freshwater, some substrate, bigger shells for them to grow into and some stuff to climb on
>>
>>2454451
It's the 75% humidity requirement that would be most problematic. My climate is very dry and interior humidity often falls below 20%. I could do it but it's more trouble than i'm willing to bother with.

fiddler crabs are pretty common pets, not too hard to care for if you have any experience with aquaria. An amphibious brackish water tank will be fine, provide them with a lamp or heater in the water if your house gets cold.

one big problem thouh is that many pet stores keep their fiddler crabs in fresh water, which really isnt good for them, they make be sickly or dying by the time you buy them.
>>
>>2454527
The reason I decided against taking care of hermit crabs was how delicate they are to sound.
>>
How does /an/ feel about horseshoe crabs? I grew up in the Long Island sound, and loved seeing them on the beach.
>>
>>2455241
Beautiful, but kind of a meme crab.
Horseshoes are to crabs what Akitas are to dogs.
>>
>>2455241
Not a crab. They're more closely related to spiders.

Ah, a rare Deep Sea Skeleton emerging from the sand to devour his crustacean prey. Nature is truly fascinating.
