Is my pound mutt going to die a shitty death because he's likely a BYB dog ?
It's about the journey, not the destination, anon.

I don't want him hobbled and in pain on the journey due to some genetic disease

You've got a bizarre conception of dogs

Aren't people generally warned against getting byb dogs because there's no genetic testing or pedigree health checks, and there's a high chance of a genetic disease?

Doesn't mean they don't deserve a loving home with as much love and care as possible.
If the dog you adopted happens to come from a BYB then suck it up and make it as comfortable and loved as possible IF it happens to have any sort of issues as it ages.

He might, but he might not

This. I rescued my second dog who came from a bad byb situation. She's 17 years old and still wants to go on hour long walks every day, and I have to force her to come home so she won't over exert herself. Had a small stint with cancer in her leg at about 13 years old, but I caught it early enough that we could remove it before it spread.
