Hi /an/
I suddenly am in charge of taking care of this cat. He's quite taken with me and I like him too, the only problem is he's fat as all fuck. I bought some good (i think) wet cat food on amazon, 5.5 oz containers.
He currently weighs around 16 lbs. I'd like to get him under 10 so he doesn't die of diabetes or some shit. How much is a reasonable amount to feed him?
I was giving him a 3 oz container of sheba pate a day, along with a tad of dry kibble for him to munch on. Suddenly the bitch doesn't like the sheba anymore, so I bought nature's variety online. He wasn't gaining or losing any weight with this diet. Though when I stopped feeding him the kibble as a "snack" he would get all pissed off and try to bite me a lot (presumably since he's hungry).
I just want him to be healthy....pic related, it's my fat ass cat
10 is too much weight loss. Shoot for 12. Also it's not just about diet, but exercise too. Get a nice toy on a string and play with him a couple days a time.

you have to do it slowly. use the guidelines on the food. feed him the amount you would give for a 15 pound cat, wait till he hits 15 pounds, then reduce it to the amount for a 14 pound cat, etc. 3oz a day is not enough, you're starving him instead of helping him lose weight.

Just feed him once a week for a while.
Let him out the other days, he'll have to catch stuff if he wants to eat. He'll lose weight fast.
what's he name
Maybe he likes being a fatass you ever think about that op

This, the guidelines on food work pretty well.
When I went away for college nobody cared about my precious kitty and so my sister and brother would overflow her food bowl with food to make her shutup.
As a result she inflated to a very unhealthy size. When I came back from college I really wasn't in the position to direct my full attention to her so she remained that weight for a while. However once I was stable enough to say 'youre going to lose weight' that was all it took.
I cut down her food to whatever a 14 pound cat was supposed to eat and I managed to get my kitty from a unhealthy 18 pounds all the way down to 14 pounds in a matter of a few months.
My vet actually told me that the rate she lost weight was unhealthy but I didn't really care since she seemed much healthier overall.
Since then her following visits with the vet have always turned back with the same weight of 14 pounds. I think this is now her minimum weight since she has excess skin that hangs from where her stomach is(much like when obese humans lose a lot of weight and have excess skin).
Not much I can do about her excess skin, but one thing that really bothers me is that she can no longer groom herself properly since she's too fat to reach certain places. As a result the hair on her rear and back legs is thick and feels as though it is matted.
I do my best brushing her but since she's an older cat (15/16) her hips are sensitive because of early arthritis. Brushing her hind legs and such is difficult and she will regularly scratch at me when I try brushing because I imagine it hurts her. Any suggestions?
>tl;dr my cat lost 4 pounds by following suggested portions on her food label but now can't properly groom herself because of her weight and is beginning to develop matted hair near her back legs

I have an automatic string toy, he doesn't remained entertained with it for more than a few minutes though. nor with a regular string toy

thanks

his name is leo
>>2446434
i think he does, 90% of the time he's just laying sprawled out on my bed (as in my OP pic) like a bourgeois hedonistic fucker
The cans of food I bought don't give an outline for how much to feed, though. Would 6 oz of food be enough for his fat belly?

>Would 6 oz of food be enough for his fat belly?
No, more. I'd guess 9 or 10 oz of wet food a day would be low enough for him to lose weight.
and you should stop letting him graze on the dry food or he'll end up not losing anything.

You just need to find some way to get it moving regularly

You might try a brush-glove. It lets you brush the hair without the feel of a real brush. Or try brushing her back legs in sections over a couple sessions in a day.

hmmm yet another item I can purchase for my cat that will go unused in a week. I can't tell how many different things I've tried with this cat. Maybe I'll give it a try though.
I've kinda resorted to just plucking at chunks when she's laying down. I can get huge chunks that will make brushing less painful since nothings getting pulled out
thanks for the advice though

In the meantime OP, while he's still a fatty take advantage of his current state to plunge your face into his soft belly

he is pretty soft, though his fur makes my face itch if i rub my head on it for too long
>>2446347
This. You're doing diet changes way too fast. Cats and many other creatures respond to big changes better when you do it in a slow, over-time manner
>>2446949
That means you're allergic, even if only mildly so.
>>2446980
the smell or having his dander around my place is fine, I just can't bury my face in his fluff...only moderately disappointing
more pictures of fat cat because he's adorable
my favorite
and i'm done for now

damn that's cute as hell
>>2446230
i like fat cats, heheh, they can't run as fast when you grab them for smoochies
Switch to a high meat content raw diet. Carbs are the leading cause cat fatness and the healthier he eats the more energy he'll have to burn calories.

what an attractive cat. adorable.

Can someone make this cat sad ?

Maybe you should stop purchasing things and actually invest your personal time into this cat you claim you care about. Buying electronics does nothing for animal that prefers having an owner or human giving it one on one attention.
ZOMG ZOMG YOU CAN'T JUST BUY X Y OR Z AND YOU HAVE TO PUT IN HARD WORK FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE WOW ZOMG ZOMG THE WORLD AND LIFE IS SO HARD.
