Specifically, a species of Triatoma; which is still an assassin bug, but they're an ectoparasite on mammals like mosquitos. They require a bloodmeal to reproduce and are known to spread certain diseases further south like Chaga's.

A bit more info: they start getting bad after a good rain, and are most often active during hours of late evening/early morning (11pm-3am). I live in the Texas Hill Country and tend to smash them on sight if they're in my home.
