Is there a safe way to sedate my dog before taking her to a vet? She's deathly afraid of other people and when she's surrounded by strangers she barks and whines incessantly, and usually winds up pissing and/or shitting herself. This makes keeping her in waiting rooms very difficult, and I don't want to have to subject her or myself to it again.

Bump
socialize her

This.
Being a lazy shut-in and not socializing your dog at all did her (and yourself) no favors
is she the dog in the pic? put her in a kennel when you take her. it will at least keep her from injuring herself.
also fucking socialize her more.

No, it's just a stock photo I pulled off google
She is about the same size though, she's a little weiner dog
How do I socialize her when she doesn't even like strangers coming into our house? She still barks at my brother in law when he visits sometimes and she's known him for like 5 years
She used to love strangers, I remember we took her to a park once and she let some random kids pet her and give her a belly rub. Then she just became super antisocial seemingly out of nowhere and won't let strangers anywhere near her, and especially not other dogs.

>sudden unexplained 180 in behavior after years
could be a literal brain problem, like rage syndrome in spaniels. you might want to have that looked at.
anyway, look up how people have socialized super aggressive dogs. I remember one anecdote about a lady who harnessed her extremely reactive german shepherd and would go to the park and sit on a bench. every time a stranger would walk by, she'd give him a treat. then eventually it'd be every time he didn't flip his shit, he got a trick. then every time he didn't make a sound. etc. positive conditioning. look up more of this.
