hey /an/, should I feel bad for not wanting to let my cat outdoors? My family thinks I'm basically a sadist for never letting my cat outside, even though he always wanders off into other peoples' yards across the street, hides when you go looking for him. 5 years ago they let my cat out and he was ran over and killed. Another cat was was mauled to death by dogs. I don't fucking get it, it's like it won't click in their heads that it's a bad idea to let your pets out when it's clearly too dangerous until all of their pets are dead.

Have already tried that. He's just too uncomfortable with it on him. The only solution they're willing to agree with is if I build him an enclosure outside, but they're still going to let him out when I'm traveling for work.
Their whole argument for letting him out is "but he's so much happier outdoors!" Yeah I'm sure he's going to be real happy when he's smashed in the road, or being ripped apart by dogs, or slowly dying because somebody poisoned him, etc. I think I would honestly rather give him away to a family I know and trust that will keep him safe and take care of him. Sorry for the rant guys, it's just really upsetting me.

Do you live with this family? If not, don't let them watch your animals while you're away. Honestly a cat can do fine for 4 or 5 days with a few gravity feeders and a ton of litter boxes, and after that you could just hire someone to come by and take care of it.
My brother let my cat out who I never saw again and then a few years later let my friend's dog out that i was watching. So I changed my locks

Aren't there kennels or friends that you can put your cat in temporarily? If you are that scared of your idiotic family, just take kitteh to a friend's house or something.
