I stumbled across a youtube video of a cat having an asthma attack earlier and realized this is exactly what my 4 year old cat has been doing on and off for years. I always assumed he was just trying to cough up a hairball, but upon further reflection I've never actually seen him throw anything up. He's always been a tiny bit wheezy, mostly when he's sleeping or all stretched out relaxing, but I always just wrote it off as a quirk, like how some people snore and some don't.

He's due for a yearly checkup so I'll be asking the vet about it soon. In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone here has had experiences with this and could offer advice, treatment methods that are especially helpful, etc? He doesn't ever seem to have trouble breathing aside from those occasional asthma attacks, which happen about once every month or two. Normally he's romping around chasing his siblings no problem - but sites do label it as chronic and progressive, so will it get worse?

Sorry to do this, but - bump.

My maine coon cat had asthma. I can't remember the name of the medication the vet put him on but its use in humans was to induce labor. It mostly cured him of the attacks. I'll look up the name of the medicine when i get home. He had to take a pill everyday so it was a pain

Thanks for your response. Did you ever use an inhaler/nebular on him?

I've been watching a lot of videos since then. Cats will swallow a lot during these attacks, and some even gag or actually vomit a little, so it's commonly confused with hairballs. The posture they take though, where they hunch up and extend their necks far enough to almost hover their chins/throats over the ground, is pretty distinctive.

Terbutaline was the name of the medication. No, i never used an inhaler on him. I had the pill form.

It's off label use in humans is to postpone labor not induce it.
