So this tick was just pulled off my leg.

Can you tell how long it's been there by how engorged it is?
>>
>>2432158
Put it back in
>>
>>2432158
Why the fuck would you take a ventral pic for this specific thing? It's like asking a doctor to take a look at your arm and shoving your hand in their face. Take a dorsal picture.

Didn't realize it was on its back. It was kind of walking around so I figured it was right side up.
>>
>>2432163
It's a deer tick. It looks like it might've fed a little bit but it's nowhere near engorged. If you're worried about Lyme transmission needs the tick to be on you for 24 to 48 hours to even happen so you should be fine considering adults are pretty hard to miss unless you literally don't shower. Keep an eye on your leg for the next month or so anyway. If you're paranoid, freeze and keep the tick somewhere.
>>
>>2432181
That may not be true, they are still researching the transmission of Lyme. Only insurance companies and doctors who are not Lyme literate believe it needs to be on for 24 hours.
>>
>>2432200

Tick has to be feeding before you can get it. If it's not engorged, it didn't feed yet.
>>
>>2432181
researchers are saying now that the tick only has to be attached a few hours before it can transmit diseases

Cite one.

Should you get an antibiotics treatment as quickly as possible after a bite?
Or just wait for a symptom or two?
>>
Hey OP, I've had Lyme for most of my life, my last infection practically broke my life in two. I don't recall perfectly but I really don't think the tick was in me for 24 hours the second time I was bitten. First time I was 1 so I have no idea. Don't fuck with this disease. You can get ticks tested AFAIK. If you decide to do nothing, watch out for the symptoms. I don't think the white circle appears every time, but a high fever should accompany every transmission in my experience (not 100% sure about that). Many doctors are absolutely Lyme-illiterate so you may even get misdiagnosed with the symptoms only. Blood tests can determine whether the disease is active in you or not. If you treat this approprietly and quickly, it will go away (probably) without a trace. If you let it run rampant in you, it can wreck your nervous system in many, many ways and in the worst case leave you an unfunctioning wreck of a human being.

I don't want to scare you, though, I'm sure you will be fine. Best of luck.
>>
do what the one anon says and keep the tick on ice and if you're worried ask a doctor, not /an/.
>>
>>2433846
Thanks for sharing, hope you can manage this thing.

There is a lot of vague info out there, but from what I'm reading you should wait for symptoms (tiredness, flu-like symptoms, the circular rash, ...) to start on antibiotics.

If no symptoms appear, you have to wait a few weeks to do a blood test since it takes time for your body to form the antibodies that are used in the identification.

Going to monitor this thing closely.
>>
>>2433846
Did you completely ignore the second bite or something for it to get so bad?
>>
Getting lyme from a tick bite is pretty rare, anon.

Fact: The reason it takes time after a bite for infection is the blood has to reach the tick's gut. It's only then that the Lyme bacteria creates the protein to bind to the tick's saliva. It then has to migrate from the gut to the mouth and the host's immune system has to be weakened for infection. Less than 1% of bites results in infection.

Fact: Deer ticks don't get lyme from deer. They get it from mice and birds. Maybe outdoor cats aren't all bad.

If you don't start to feel symptoms, don't worry about it. There are horror stories like >>2433846
who probably did get it when he was 1, but for the most part lyme isn't a big deal. I'd be more worried about the hundred other things you can get from a tick bite.

Another Lyme related story: when I was in 8th grade, our science teacher decided that late spring was the perfect time to go waltzing through a densely-packed field of tall grass to learn about surveying. No idea what ticks were at the time, but apparently it was the absolute worst time of the year for it. Walked off that field none the wiser, then at the end of the day I started feeling that wonderful feeling of things crawling on you. By the time I came down from the panic attack, the school nurses had picked off and dug out more than 30 ticks. Thirty.

For the next 16 years I kept getting sick every few months - nausea, headaches, exhaustion, mild fever, and it would put me down solid for 3-4 days at a time. Finally ended up going to an Infectious Disease specialist who blood tested me. My terminology is weak, but he said I have two of the alleles for Lyme. Seems odd to me, but he said it explains why it constantly flares up but never takes hold. His methods of treatment haven't worked, so I'm sorta shit out of luck for now.

So essentially I've got a biological insurgent that comes out and suicide bombs my system every few months and makes it hard to hold down jobs. Shit's great.
>>
Can you take my personal experience? I've seen someone get a tick removed after a few hours and get Lyme's twice. My father and my close friend's daughter. It's a bummer that nurses and doctors recite the 24 hour things when I've seen it be completely untrue twice.
>>
I just went to Vet so he can extract one of these evil motherfuckers who was attached to my dog's neck.
>>
>>2433934
I'm not saying the 24-48 hour period is a 100% confirmed thing but all you have is anecdotal evidence. A lot of Lyme transmissions are from nymphs that aren't easily detected. Nobody walks around with an adult tick attached to them for that long.
>>
>>2433909
The day I removed the tick (or maybe after) I developed a very high fever and a really weird sick feeling. It went away on its own, a few days later during an event with my friends I had a completely baseless panic attack in which I believed the dishwashing gel that somehow got left on the plate I ate from would dissolve my throat. I felt it happening and I sincerely thought I was going to die. Even though lyme was diagnosed quickly and I was conscious of it my next month was about scorpions in my bed, maggots in my brain, my veins just going pop and internal bleedings etc. and it was REAL. Afterwards it developed into severe, unconditional depression for a looong time. The reason it got so bad so quickly was because the disease still remained in me in a dormant state from my first infection. So it was an overinfection.

>>2433878
Thanks, I'm completely OK now. This was 7 years ago.

>>2433933
That's what's so strange, it affects everyone differently. Don't give up hope, I sincerely hope you will get better.
>>
>>2434020
>Thanks, I'm completely OK now. This was 7 years ago.
I'm genuinely glad to hear that.
Fuck these random illnesses that ruin your life for allowing a blade of grass to brush against your leg.
>>
>>2434134
This shit would still be lethal had we not developed and adapted as a species.
Thank fucking god for opposable thumbs, yeah?
>>
>>2434137
Hear hear.
>>
I picked a tick off myself a while ago. Zero blood inside, I didn't think it managed to attach itself. About two weeks later the rash showed up.
>>
>>2434214
Then what? Antibiotics?
>>
You guys are so serious about this. When i was a kid id play in my tick infested backyard and before i went back inside id pull up my pant legs and pull off half a dozen ticks. when id go in the shower later id pull off the rest.
>>
>>2434495

>You guys are so serious about this.

You know they're full of shit, right?
>>
>>2434495

Tick/Lyme posting is the new cat/toxoplasmosis.
>>
>>2434603
You mean all hype?
>>
>>2434495
And look how you turned out.
>>
>>2434494
It looked typical enough to get a cefuroxime prescription straight away, yeah. I'm looking to get an ELISA test later on too.
>>
>>2434724
And after the antibiotics, no more symptoms?
>>
>>2434623

It's not all hype. It is a danger, but no more than any other infection that can be presented by a bite from any insect. Fleas, ticks, mosquitos, even deerfly and horsefly can give you some nasty shit.

If you develop flu-like symptoms in a time like late-spring or summer and/or get the bullseye rash, by all means go to the doctor. Tell them you had a tick bite and tell them you go outside a lot because >>2433960 speaks the truth. You don't need an adult tick bite to contract it.

But this whole "OMG, I got a tick on my, better capture it and go to the ER" thing is ridiculous.

but where do you live? Lyme ticks have been slowly working their way north the past 10 or more years. They're more common now in places they weren't before.

>lyme ticks

No such thing. Ticks get lyme from mice and birds, most specifically the white-tailed mouse.
