Hey /an/, I recently purchased a giant desert millipede. I've never owned a millipede, or anything other than a dog before, so I'm a bit of a retard when it comes to these sorts of animals.
Recently, I've noticed the millipede has been very lethargic. It basically spends most of its time hiding and curled up. I know they are supposed to be nocturnal, but I'm usually up past midnight and don't see it moving. Any idea what could be causing this behavior?

give us an idea of the setup. size, temperature, humidity, how much substrate, what do you feed.
>>2416857
>Size
About 15x8x4.5 inches
>Temp
About 70 F
>Humidity
Initially, I had it about 50%, because I was told that since it was a desert species it wouldn't need much. However, I've also heard that millipedes like higher humidity, so I have it at about 70% now.
>Substrate
About an inch and a half of shredded walnut casings.
>Feed
Various fruits like strawberries, bananas, apples, etc.
don't they get bored?

Maybe, I've heard they like to cluster up. Perhaps I should get him a cage-mate?

up the temperature a bit and put in some proper substrate. cocounut fiber, ecoearth, something like that, and 4-5 inches. scatter leaf litter on top as well

Did you inform yourself AT ALL before getting one? What the fuck.
They burrow. Into soil. They also eat the soil, or rather rotten wood in the soil.
It's lethargic and not moving because it can't burrow.
Also if it can burrow you won't see it as it spends the vast majority of its life underground. You might see it every 2 or 3 weeks at night, at most.
I think you have the completely wrong impression about these animals.

No, what the fuck?
Topsoil + rotten wood pieces. This isn't a tarantula.

That's your problem. Substrate is THE most important factor in millipede ownership since they are burrowing animals and also feed on the substrate. What you're doing is like keeping a fish in milk instead of water and expecting it to be fine.
What this guy is saying >>2416900 is absolutely correct. You need leaf litter since it forms the bulk of their diet. I hear oak is good. You also need decomposing wood, also oak or something similar.
Seriously dude you need to do more research.

Thanks for the information anons. Unfortunately, it seems the breeder I bought it from must've been bullshitting me. He said throw a little bit of sand and fruit in there and that's all it would need. I assumed he knew what he was talking about, but it seems like that was a mistake on my part.

>Orthoporus Ornatus
Good taste OP, I have the same thing in a similar setup, I am adding more substrate too. Maybe this thread was a sign lol

I got mine another to keep him company. They do like sleeping together in the corner of their home.
